This past Easter started off like any other my 4 year old had a bit of a cough but was not ill and still running around like a little monster then at 5pm on Good Friday her temp started to creep up and was up to 39.1 degrees before we knew it so gave her some panadol and it cam down. She was coughing a bit but nothing crazy. The next morning she woke up and still had a bit of a temp but seemed ok again so just watched her. That afternoon she was so sleepy, high temp, cough and every time she breathed in she moaned. I am currently in first year at uni doing nursing but have no real idea, i listened to her chest with my newly bought stethoscope that I had purchased for uni and i could here the faintest crackle like hair being rubbed together in your ear. I asked my husband to listen and he said I was hearing things and she was ok. I then counted her breaths per minute and it was 50 breaths a minute which seemed high so I googled and sure enough and average is 20-30 a minute for her age. Then I decided I would take her to the emergency room she was so sleepy and when we were seen the first doctor a resident listened to her chest couldn’t hear anything then asked me do I think she looked unwell?? I answered well she is struggling to breath and can’t stay awake so yes I think she looks unwell she then said its just an upper respiratory tract infection and she will just confirm this with her boss then we could go home. I was not comfortable and knew it was not just this and asked if her boss could look over her if that was ok. Her boss came in and asked some more questions then listened to her chest and low and behold she said oh i can hear bronchial sounds and we might get a chest X-ray and get a pead doctor down to check her over. Lucky they did because when the pead looked at the X-rays and looked her over he said she has Pneumonia and will need to be hospitalised because her heart rate was at about 150 beats per minute and it may of gotten into her blood. After 3 days in hospital on antibiotics she is back to her crazy self but what if I hadn’t asked for her to be checked over again and was sent home. Always listen to your gut!!

Nobody normally moans as they breathe unless is a problem. I’m glad you insisted on another Dr. checking her. THe resident Dr. needs to go back to Uni. and learn what she should have learnt the first time. A qualified nurse should have known that your little girl’s breathing wasn’t normal. They would normally check the patient before a Dr. does in Emergency. That is very high blood pressure. I think could easily have had a heart attack.

Trusting your gut instinct is one of the most amazing gift that life has to offer and sadly too many people don’t trust nor listen to their instinct. I’m so glad you got a happy ending
