Hello!

We just came back from Adelaide and we had a great relaxing time . What I wanted to ask has anyone been to the Barossa Valley /Hahndorf Highlights tour ? I was surprised they didn’t give us a lesson on how they made their wines and the opportuntity to tread on grapes like a lot of people from past tours mentioned . Has it recently been changed as a bit disappointed on that part.

  • The only time they crush grapes with their feet is during the Harvest Festival. Some tours visit various wineries/ some have tours of the area where wine is “processed” amd wine tastings. Some also have a Restruant. Did they take you to the Barossa Reservoir also known as the Whispering Wall. There is only one other in the world – in Sweden. The reservoir wall is curved. The top of it is fenced and you can walk across it. At either end of it there is a small fenced off area adjacent to the wall. You can stand next to the wall and whisper or talk and a person the other end of the wall (best if it is a relative or friend) can hear you as clearly as if you are standing next to them. It is very entertaining for adults and children who are interested. There is a picnic area. There is no public access in very stormy/ very hot often windy days for safety reasons. Being surrounded by thick scrub in some sections fire risk is high. There is also the risk of native trees falling. Last time we visited there was a good cafe on the left side as you head back to the main road. It is just outside the town of Williamstown? Did you visit the Towns of Hahndorf (settled by Germans) where there is a stable conveted to a motel, some German Hotels which serve German food and Beers. On the outskirts there is the former home of the late Hans Heysen a famous artist who painted the scenery in the surrounding area. In Gumeracha is the Giant Rocking Horse, wooden toy factory, a small wild life sanctuary and a small cafe.

  • Yes and loved it. I still dream about the strawberry farm in Hahndorf – they were the best tasting strawberries I’ve ever eaten.

  • I have never been on a tour of the Barossa Valley although I would love to one day. I recently visited the Yarra Valley in Victoria. I went with a large group and whilst it was a tour per se it was not organised by a tour company. Instead it was organised by one of the members of our group. It was fantastic because instead of visiting all the usual well known wineries we visited a small boutique winery that doesn’t usually host visitors and they gave us a great insight into how a smaller, less commercial winery produces wines. I would encourage anybody visiting wine regions to, if possible, seek out some of the lesser known wineries for a more unique experience.

  • I have not done the tour in the Barossa but i have done one in sydney about 20 years ago and I felt it lacked the knowledge of the wine maker. You do see the tour busses pull up in Barossa and all it seems to be is drive to cellar door to cellar door and just taste with no explanation like in Europe where they take you to see the grapes growing and down to the cellars and see the huge vats etc. If you are back in Adelaide the Coopers Brewery tour is really good as you get to see how they make it and the bottling. much more educational and informative then any of the wineries.

    • Thank You . Your answer is similar to my brother in laws. He said you don’t need the feet to squash grapes , machines crush them . The era of new technology lol.

  • Thank you for your responses. I thought so too but I think it is no longer available .

    • Maybe you can find some tours locally near you – if something similar is offered in your area?

  • I have not been on this tour. Maybe re-check with them about tours and availability times if you go back again. Tours can vary for different times of the year.

    • That’s so true about tours incorporating different things at different times of the year. Not sure if that’s the case here though.

  • Maybe they offer a variety of different tours?
