Hello!

I get so many looks as I push my pram in the shopping centre. I am 20 years old and have a baby!

What people don’t know is that, our daughter was no accident, she wasn’t a result if a drunken night or anything like that!

My husband-yes husband- decided it was time to have a baby.

Like most older mothers, we have our own mortgage, two cars and big dreams! We were just lucky enough to be so financially stable that we can afford everything we need to survive. Especially now that I’m not working.

So many times I’m asked if my daughter is my sister and its like come on guys you don’t need to say things like that! I get deeply affended because yeah I’m young but what has that got to do with anything. I am certainly not a bad mother for it. Generally speaking its the 25-40 year old parents that say things like that. The older generations play with Hayley and ask about her. See they most likely had kids young too and make no judgement. It’s not like I wear torn dirty clothes or dress my baby inappropriatly yet as I walk past middle aged mothers 7/10 times there is a sideways glance or worse a stare with critical eyes burning my entire body!

I am not a bad parent nor am I stupid for having my beautiful little girl! I am proud of what I have accomplished in life. So next time you see a young mom, just smile at them! You don’t know their situation, for all you know they could be depressed and staring at them like they are lower than dirt can really damage some people.

My husband and i have been together for 5 years and married for 1 year. We both love our daughter so so much.As you love your own children.

Please don’t think any different of me because of my age! See past that and see the woman desperately in love with her life

  • Maybe other people think you look younger than you are. People are too quick to judge. As long as you are happy, a good Mum and take good care of your baby,( and your case your husband too and he takes good care of you and your baby too) that is all that has to matter to you. Just try to ignore them. I know it can be very hard sometimes.

  • Well said and congratulations in having a beautiful child who sounds very much loved. We had our first when I was 22 and I can totally relate to everything you said. The thing total strangers didn’t know but so quick to stare was that I had been married for two years, in my last year of my Psychology degree and have a fantastic hubby who not only works so hard to provide roof over my head but that we legitimately wanted to have kids young. Don’t worry about anyone else and enjoy your beautiful family because no matter what we do in life people will always judge.

  • Gosh, you and your husband are doing well to be so financially and emotionally stable at such a young age. You can’t really blame those who give critical glances. There are so many girls younger then you who have babies just because they don’t want a job. They hang around the malls and shopping centres, yelling and swearing and carrying on, cigarette hanging out their mouths, babies crying in prams etc. These are the ones that give young parents a bad name and they are prevalent everywhere.

  • Perhaps you think you get sideways glances and you don’t. Plenty of young women have babies and I am friends with them and certanly don’t look sideways at them they have far more energy to expend with their bub than I do being younger is a good time to have a baby

  • Well said…..It sounds to me that you are a beautiful, well adjusted mother who knows what she wants. There is no rule book that states when you should start your family. Its personal choice! I wish you and your beautiful family all the very best that life has to offer!

  • You can be young but, still wiser than an immature 40 year old.
