Hello!

Thank you to casegirl and everyone else sharing their breastfeeding stories. I am another who did not find it “easy” or “natural” to breastfeed. After having the most boring pregnancy known to man I ended up in an emergency c-section due to heart rates dropping and other things. My daughter, who is now 9 months was born healthy.

In hospital I experienced the same thing, midwifes just pushing her onto my breast to feed and after a couple of days I was cracked, bleeding and scabbed (which is now permanently scarred). She never got enough from me and I never experienced that “heavy” feeling that most mothers experience when they are full of milk. We tried nipple shields, expressing between feeds (sometimes for almost an hour each) and yet nothing worked. She was being topped up by formula to get what she needed which the nurses and lactation consultants were trying to get me to stop (mothers instinct always told me she needed it though). I even went to the GP and was prescribed Motilium after having to cry in the consult room because it was 4 weeks later and my milk hadn’t “come in” and the doctor did not want to give it to me. The Motilium game marginal improvement but even after 6 weeks it stopped working.

It was at this point that I decided that changing her to be a formula fed baby was the only way to go to save my sanity. Having since found out that there is a history of feeding problems in my family (we either have way too much or not enough) and that myself and my brother were both formula fed it now makes a lot more sense as to why I had the same issues. I still feel guilty that I wasn’t able to breastfeed, but to see my little one healthy and not wanting for anything helps to cement the fact that I did the best with what I was given.
