The Royal Australasian College of Physicians is wanting and end to alcohol sponsorship in cricket. They are concerned about the influence this advertising has on children. I listen to sports broadcasts and don’t often see these ads on TV. Do other mums see these ads and what do you think about the influence on children? Does it influence you to buy alcohol?

  • I think the advertizing influences some people to buy the product and certainly “normalises” the product so that it becomes familiar. Instead of thinking of it as something foreign, perhaps of interest to a small minority, it becomes something that you expect to see about the place. Something you are more likely to try if the opportunity ever arose. I think making it ‘common place’ is dangerous. The fact that a family sport is being used to expose people to a product that has such potential for harm is a bad idea… would rather see sports shoes or sun-protective clothing or healthy eating etc. advertized!

  • It probably has influence on some teenagers…..and adults also who watch a variety of sports. Cricket isn’t the only one has alcohol sponsors. For a long time it has been a custom for the guys to drink a few beers while watching the sport on TV or at an event. Some are drinking wine instead….or both during matches. Now the women are drinking too – sometimes not near as much as they are probably the designated drivers. I don’t blame them, they have as much right to have a good time with their family and friends. I have no issue with people drinking in moderation and not enough to effect their reflexes, concentration etc. Parents need to watch that young children don’t pick up their drinks. If they do you can guarantee they will attempt to drink it.

  • I think an advertising ban during sports would be appropriate.

  • I hope they tighten the rules around advertising.

  • Advertising does work on children and adults which is why big dollars are spent to advertise products. Sport is a healthy past time and I am always a bit saddened that fast food, drinking and gambling have been associated with sport coverage and advertising.

  • I honestly don’t think kids pay that much attention to adverts and sponsors. Their biggest influences are in and around the home
