Hello!

Last week, I collected my daughters from the grandparents. I carried Miss 1 in my arms across the road while Grandmother carried the bags. Grandfather crossed the road with Miss 4. When I turned, I saw that Grandfather and Miss 4 were jay walking, were a few metres apart and not holding hands.

I was shocked and told Miss 4 always to hold Grandfather’s hand when crossing the road. She told me that they never cross the road holding hands. Grandmother told Grandfather to hold her hand from now on.

My husband spoke to Grandmother and Grandfather about this at a separate time. They did not seemed concerned. Both Grandmother and Grandfather do not hold Miss 4’s hand when they are crossing the road (in a suburban street). My husband said that I can’t bring it up any more unless I am there when it happens.

I would be interested to know what other mothers think of this!

  • Thats scary but I am glad you actually seen it so now you can say something about it to them

  • I would be bringing it up and bringing it up and bringing it up,until it stopped. I always cross the road as I want my children to cross the road. We stop, hold hands, look both ways, listen and if it’s safe to cross….off we go. It’s sad that these grandparents think it’s ok to teach the unsafe way to do something

  • My 8 year old still needs guidance when crossing the road. Kids are so unpredictable, especially at the age of 4. Holding hands is a definite.

  • She is definitely too young to cross the road by herself. Your child safety come first, so insist that they hold her hand when crossing the road.

  • A four year old child in unpredictable and so are many motorists! I’d insist on hands np being held!

  • I wonder what age your hubby was when he first crossed the road without holding hands?

  • I would be very unhappy with my husband for not taking this seriously and insisting that his parents change their ways. Crossing the road, or even being near a road at that age should require the child to hold an adults hand. I’d talk to them again and your husband to show that this makes you feel uncomfortable with them taking your children out.

  • As a Mom you can bring up whatever you like whenever you like; your children and your rules and this includes safety. Children need to follow rules with every person in their lives. You have the right to insist upon holding hands.

  • I would be insisting that they hold her hand. You shouldn’t have to witness them not holding her hand to be able to talk to them about it!

  • I would be very unhappy if I was in your situation.
Holding hands is so important when crossing the road and in carparks

  • I think this is a safety risk, and you should have the right to insist that they always hold her hand crossing the road.

  • I always insist on holding hands while near a road or in a car park (not just crossing). There are too many unpredictable drivers and young children may not know the danger signs like the sounds of a speeding car.

  • Holding hands is important when they are little.

  • It is the safety of your children and your parents or parents in law should respect this. She is only 4 that is too young to be walking across the road by herself!
