Hello!

Some of you may recall I posted a story about a grassroots organisation/charity called ‘Days for Girls’. Well I’d really like to encourage anyone interested to get involved and go to the website www.daysforgirls.org and look for Australian groups within your local state. I will attach a picture in the comments of 3 bags that I made today ready to be threaded with cord/ribbon. So excited too because my husband bought me an overlocker 2 days ago. Feeling very blessed.

  • May I ask for the bags are going to be used for?
Some ladies in a charity sewing group are making bags for distibution to our public maternity / childrens hospital. Sometimes Mums, especially from countries arrive with nothing but the clothes they are wearing if their child is rushed into hospital sick or injured. We make up “comfort” bags with soap, deodorant, combs, toothbrushes. toothpaste etc. We have tried to get some suppliers to give us samples to use. Some of us buy some when they are out on special. We also make boxer shorts in various sizes that Mums can wear as knickers if they wish while they wash out their knickers and get them dry to wear again. They are stored separately and the Mums take a pair that fits them. Some go in to give birth and have nothing. For the children, we make up bags and put toys, colouring in pencils and colouring in books. The hospital staff give them out according to ager group and what is in them. We also put in little story books that either a youngster can read or a visitor can read to them.

    • Firstly that is amazing work that you & the craft group are doing. The bags I am making house a sanitary/hygeine kit which includes 2 reusable shields (made from cotton with a special plastic lining layer), 8 liners (made with layers of flannellette), 2 pairs of knickers, a hotel sized soap, a face washer, pictorial instructions & 2 large ziplock bags. The Post Partum/maternity kits contain more liners (which are bigger in size) & a few other additional things. It provides girls and women around the world with dignity & equal opportunities to go to school & work because they don’t have to hide at home during their periods.
