So as every mum knows, toddlers are almost impossible to control when you go out to dinner. Unless, your one of the lucky mums with the miracle toddlers you see every now and them that sits still, doesn’t scream, throw food and eats their dinner. I have two little girls, 2 and 3. And have braved dinner outings many times but something always seems to go wrong :( I’m a very mellow sort of mum and I don’t sweat the small things but high pitched screaming tantrums do pinch a nerve some days. Sometimes I try table games like colored food, ordering food that goes with a theme, coloring in, rewards, ect. There aren’t many restaurants in North Brisbane that are truly child friendly. So almost always something goes wrong….whether its a mega baby meltdown or a child that refuses to eat….it always happens. Any suggestions ladies?

  • maybe try to go out for breakfast or a late or earlier lunch. Try to avoid going out when it would clash with your normal routine. If bub always sleeps at midday and you try going to lunch at midday, there will be tears. Try to bring some entertainment even an age appropriate app on your phone will do. Take some pencils and paper with you

  • We went out often when my children were younger and generally they were well behaved. I always made sure I had some cars or something to play with and I let them order what they wanted – I found it wasn’t worth the fight to try and get them to eat veggies so chips it was.

  • Maybe explain what sort of behaviour is expected of them.

  • Maybe try a reward chart; every child gets one. Make the charts; about A5 size and the kids carry it with them. The chart has 5 spots for stars. The kids have to earn the stars. You set up the reward system; such as sitting quietly through dinner, eating with a fork/spoon, using a quiet inside voice, trying food, etc. Give the stars to the kids as dinner progresses; rewards have to be instant. At the end of the dinner; if the chart has 5 stars; give a reward and only to the child that has 5 stars. It may take a while; but may be worth trying. Make the reward something that they want/desire and again make it instant. Good Luck!

  • It may be worth getting a hand held game or something like that to help pass the time. what we do is go for early dinner and then take the tablet , that way we get though dinner

  • How sad there are no comments or suggestions here. Maybe you’ve tried all that we could have suggested? Personally, I’m waiting until my girls are a little bit older when they can control themselves a little more, and have more understanding, before I attempt such feats!! lol :-)
