as full time stay at home parents when it comes to sickness we never get a break. I have been sick with a cold for the last two weeks (mind you it went from me to my daughter then hubby and back to me). i havent slept more than 4 hours a night, yet somehow i managed to get up and do everything as normal. i am a stay at home mum to two children both girls. i dont get the glorious sick days and time off when i’m not feeling well. i honestly dont know how we do it.

this year due to health problems right before winter started i had to stop eating something that i believe has helped me through winter many years before, garlic. due to IBS i cannot eat either garlic, onion or capsicum so miss out on a lot of the key nutrients i need to keep the bugs away. winter is always the worst time in the year for me as my youngest has a slightly worse off immune system then the rest of the family because of her heart surgeries. however this year she was lucky and only scraped through with a minor cold and a phlegm cough.

i guess the point of my story is to say to all the stay at home parents, dont stress over the little things when you are sick and caring for your children. take it easy as rest when possible. maybe have a movie day with the kids or dont be afraid to ask for help. we are only human after all.

  • That is so true! Our job is under paid, over worked, no sick leave or holidays. But I wouldn’t be without it

  • Well said and hope you all get better soon. Nothing worse when you are sick than having to deal with other sick people

  • well said, and i hope your little one is well soon

  • I hear you. The worse time I can remember was when hubbyb was away and being sick with gastro while looking after a 2 yo and a 5 month old.

  • ” i dont get the glorious sick days and time off when i’m not feeling well.” Oh dear.

No matter what our role is we all have responsibilities. If everyone that was in the work force took a ‘glorious sick day’ off every time they were sick the country would come to a grinding halt in winter. Most people just soldier on whether they’re a stay at home mum, dad, retired or in the workforce.

    • i get that if everyone took time off when sick in winter nothing would get done but to me your comment came across as a bit of a dig at what i said. fair enough have your opinion but all i was saying was all in all people who are stay at home parents dont get the luxury of a sick day when they are unwell.

  • It is the worst being sick when you’re at home with the kids. All I wanted to do today was stay curled up in bed but my 3 month old had had enough of being in bed but if course as soon as we leave the warmth of the bed he decides it’s his nap time

  • Being sick when you’re a SAHM, either temporarily or permanently, is the WORST.

  • Oh yeah I definitely don’t know how you do it. I was thinking this a while back when I was sick. I work 4 days per week so for me all I needed to do was bundle the kids up and drop them off to their respective places (school and childcare) and then go home and sleep until it was pick up time. Definitely easier when you can have some time to recuperate with no kids.

  • I agree, I was six months pregnant coming into winter- with an 18 month old as well- I have been sick almost the whole three months with a cold/flu and if I didn’t have one then my daughter did- worst winter ever and you can’t just sleep it off!! Just gotta keep on going. The power of parents!!!

  • That is the thing no matter how hard your day is try and find a bright spot in it. A movie day and pj day are great for the sole. Hope your house is well soon

  • My daughter is on day 2 of the flu and crossing fingers and toes that none of the rest of us get it.

  • The flu went through my family of 4 as well and of course I got it the worst (lasted just over 6 weeks). Although I was lucky as my children are early aged teenagers so they could help with a few things. What I tried to do during this time was only what was absolutely necessary and now 3 weeks later I’m still trying to catch up but with all the rain we are having it near impossible
