Hello!

I have always been of the opinion that education starts at home. If I don’t care enough about my childrens education to teach them as much as I can ( the basics….numbers, letters, colours, writing their name, how to socialise and what responses are acceptable in different social siuations) then why should I expect someone else to cars enough to teach them. Now I am no supermum, I have 2 small children, work a few hours a week outside the home, I don’t have endless time on my hands but to me this seems like my responsibility as a parent. So I have been surprised of late to hear how many other parents feel it’s not their job to teach their children anything. That’s what they go to school for and what teachers get paid for…Really??

I’m interested are these parents a minority or am I odd to care so much about getting my children school ready? What are your thoughts?

  • Don’t hold them back if they are keen to learn. Their teacher will be settling in a whole class of children when your child starts school. Upset children distract others from learning. You can teach your child to colour in large drawings, spell own name, write their name, address. If you read to your child he/she may show interest in reading a few words.

  • If the child wants to learn don’t wait for school to start. But learning does not mean sitting and learning formally but on the go as they have fun.

  • I am 100% with you. Numbers, colours, letters, reading etc it all begins at home. I’ve spent a lot if time doing this with my kids. And it can be fun, we make a game of it, yet they still learn

  • I think children show their readiness to read, write their name and understand number concepts. Of course education begins at home, but play is how children learn first. Just holding and interacting with toys, being shown how things work, talking and reading to children, set this process in motion. Every child learns in their own way, at a different pace, and their interests are a big motivator to learning.

  • I’m amazed at what teachers are expected to teach…many things that I feel should be taught at home.

  • I also think that going to a famous school is not that necessary. Great education starts at home

  • I completely agree. There’s no excuse and parents plays an important role in educating the kids,

  • If all parents took more responsibility (as many do) about working WITH Educators and less time drawing up artificial boundaries of responsibilitychildren would be better off.

  • Oh absolutely I’m not saying they should be solely responsible. I’m just surprised by the amount of parents who think education is solely a teachers job.

  • I agree that parents need to teach a lot of things and be responsible for an atmosphere of learning, but they can’t shoulder all of the burden – it takes a village for a broad range of education.
