We all dread organising kids parties. There’s just so much to think of… food, games, prizes.
I had found some cheap gold coin & had planned a treasure hunt at my daughter’s party. Had organised for a guest to hide the coins while I detracted the kids. Unfortunately even with the coins being in the freezer within 2 minutes they had all melted & it was just a big mess. After discussing with a friend we have came up with an alternative to the game…
Next time I decided to do a treasure hunt & would recommend to everyone else is to place tickets or similar items that can be cashed in for chocolates at the end. Would have a limit on how many chocolates each child got as the older ones seemed to get a bit carried away & left none for the younger ones.

  • Or one small prize per child.

  • Aw how frustrating for you all that effort into the game and they melted!great idea though. I’m storing that ticket idea for a later date too! Maybe board game pieces… I wonder if any op shops have any old board games that’ll do the trick.

  • Love the ticket idea!!! That way you can control who gets what prizes. Like you said, the older kids tend to get carries away..

  • well it was a great idea though and still fun for the kids

  • oh fantastic idea! Making sure little kids get a go IS difficult, I would maybe colour code the tickets so kids over 5 can only get blue ones and kids under 5 can get red or blue (because some of them may not know their colours yet) =)

  • Oh no. We have had that with Easter egg hunts in the past! great idea with the tickets though – I will keep that in mind for my sons party in June (and for Easter if it’s warm this year!)

  • This is a great idea – I always dread the Pinata at the birthday parties and refuce to have one at any I host.

  • What a way to learn that lesson. We have used wrapped lollies for hunts to stop this happening.

  • Good idea, I’ve used counters or little plastic toys in the past.

  • Great idea. We always tell people how much of each they can find so each child gets an equal amount – otherwise the bigger kids always get the most.

  • That is a great idea. Monopoly money or something similar could work as well. I had never thought of this. It has been very hot though. I had a similar thing happen recently when we went to a cricket outing. My son’s birthday had been not long beforehand, so I decided to shout the whole club some paddle pops, as they are always great to us. Unfortunately it had been a very hot day 38-40 and when I got home from shopping there was a power outage, due to weather apparently. We went early and I put them in the clubs freezer, only to hand them out to the children who got half melted piles of slush.

  • I like to hide the party favours the kids are going to take home and explain at the start of the hunt that the items will be shared out at the end.
