Hello!

Not long ago I posted about my two special needs children and the fact that perfection isnt always what we think. My girls have leukodystrophy and autism and because of this we often fight for things that most families wouldnt have to. One of our greatest fights was to try and get a wheelchair accessible van so that my girls could use their wheelchairs outside of the house, and so when we are in a fire evacuation again we do not have to leave their wheelchairs behind.

I want to share the fact that we have won this battle thanks to a wonderful charity called Make A Difference WA. They heard our plight and offered assistance. They obtained a Toyota Hiace for us, and went as far as to organise tracking and tie downs for two wheelchairs for future usage as well as providing 6 seats for us to use now. Five for us, and a spare seat for when their dad is with us or their cousin needs to be driven to school. This was then presented to us on the 8th of July 2013 by former cricket star Justin Langer.

To say I cried tears of joy would be an understatement.

But their kindness hasnt stopped there. Not only have they provided us with a van that will make life a lot easier, but they have also paid for the materials to renovate the carport of our rental (through the Shire of Chittering). And they liaised with the local Bindoon Men’s Shed to provide the “man power” behind it.

In a few weeks time our carport will be lowered to fit a Toyota Hiace in it with ease, as well as a ramp from the front door to the Hiace.

Because of the generosity of these people, we will no longer have to get wheelchairs together out in the rain. We will no longer have to decide which child gets their decent wheelchair and which gets the cruddy one to go out. We will no longer have to make the decision of leaving wheelchairs behind in an evacuation so that we can fit in food and clothes. There are so many things we will be able to do.

I wanted to share this so I can thank the foundations publicly, but also so I can tell other families like us not to give up. The road to life might seem rocky but dont give up because there are people out there that give two hoots and want to help. It just might take time.
