Hello!

With winter coming (rapidly!), I thought some people might be interested in this safety tip I got from the fire department.

By the way, if you didn’t know – your local fire station will come out and tell you the safest place to locate your smoke detectors. They’ll even install them for you in some cases. Just give them a call.

Anyway, when the firies were putting my smoke detectors up, they asked about our evacuation plan. We’ve got one, but I told them I was worried about the design of our house – it’s an L shape, with the kids’ bedrooms in the long arm, and ours in the short arm, with the kitchen and living areas in the bend. I was worried that a fire in the kitchen could cut us off from the kids, especially at night.

So the firies told me to keep a hammer in my bedroom. If a fire starts at night, my husband and I go straight out of the house (through the front door or our bedroom window), and use the hammer to break one of the kids’ windows to get to them. Much faster than using keys to get in the back of the house. Let’s face it, in an emergency I won’t care about a broken window or two, just the kids.

  • The only way to the front and back door from the bedrooms in our home is through the kitchen , so our escape plan is through the bedroom windows. We have store bought fire alarms and also wired in alarms that are turned on after the last person has gone to bed along with the burglar alarm. Fire safety should always be up the top of the list of importance. Thanks for the great tip and post. :-)

  • Thanks that is a great idea to have the firies available to advise us on the best locations for our smoke detectors as two of ours are continually triggered in the kitchen & laundry.

  • Thats a great idea, we have a CFS worker that lives next door to us and he went through a bush fire plan with us, its a scary thought but i guess everyone needs to be ready if it did ever happen to you.

  • That’s a great idea. I didn’t know about your local fire station coming out but that is a fantastic idea and something I have had occasion to think about – is it located in the right place in terms of the direct safety of my son etc. They sound like they have you some great advice with the hammer idea. Did it cost to have them come out if you don’t mind me asking?

    • No, HopefullyHeidi, it didn’t cost anything. I had to supply the smoke detectors, of course, but there was no charge for the visit, the advice, or for putting them up. They do of course mention when you make the appointment that a fire emergency could result in a short notice cancellation or abrupt departure. And fair enough!
