Hello!

Hello. I am 28 and a half weeks pregnant. I started out the pregnancy already overweight, I am now 3 to 4 kgs away from being sent to the City Hospital (300kms away from where I live) as the local hospital won’t deliver babies from mothers who’s BMI reaches or goes over 40. Apparently a directive of Country Health SA. So this is my dilemma how do I lose fat weight, gain baby weight and not put on any more weight overall?? Step One – keep a food diary (no calorie counting but to track the general health of my overall intake), Step Two – make more home foods and products (for example I have just finished bagging over 2.5kgs of stewed apples that I prepared myself & have eaten a fresh peach for my morning tea), Step Three – Increase exercise (today I went for a 20 minute walk & plan to ride on my recumbent bike). Improving my overall health during this pregnancy hasn’t been easy, suffering from bad morning sickness for 16 weeks, dealing with the pains of Pelvic Instability & the emotions of Perinatal Depression, as well as stresses from certain family members, however I am getting back on track & feel good about the future. If anyone has suggestions on improving health and wellbeing during pregnancy please share your thoughts.

  • Sympathy. This would be really hard. Seeing a nutritionist might help? Your GP should be able to refer you.

  • Thankyou Ladies. I am drinking at least 2 litres of water a day… I love water. I will occasionally have a coffee or juice but not everyday. I am on day 6 of keeping my food diary… my next visit to the doctors surgery is on the 19th of February for a Midwives Appointment I will be able to check in then as to my weight progress.

  • Agree with all your suggestions. Keep active as much as possible, walking is fantastic and so is swimming (even just walking in the pool) because it is low impact. Keeping a diary is a great way to have some full visibility over what you put in your mouth. Drink lots of water and as for food try to eat as much lean meat and fresh vegies as you can. As you get further along in your pregnancy you will find yourself getting hungry more often so make sure you have lots of healthy snacks on hand to beat the hunger such as raw vegetable sticks or yoghurt (try to avoid sugar laden varieties). Good luck.

  • I think that writing in a Food Diary is a great idea. Often we think we are eating healthy, till we actually write down what we eat every day. And there we found the problems. I think it’s very good of you to that. The same for walking. Maybe you could add a second walk (for example one in the morning and one in the late afternoon) to help keeping fit. Cooking your own food is fantastic. Avoid any packed food from the supermarket, or at least reduce it to start.
How many kilos do you need to lose to reach an acceptable BMI? Also try to drink a lot of water.
Let us know your progress! I hope you will succeed :-)

    • I am currently sitting 3 to 4 kgs under the BMI of 40. I either need to maintain my current weight or even better lose a couple of kgs to ensure that I stay in my home town for delivery… they say not to try and lose weight or calorie count whilst pregnant, definitely not calorie counting just trying to lose fat, gain baby and not have to travel for the birth.

      • I understand. It wouldn’t be good indeed to lose too many kilos. Think about how wonderful it would be if you could deliver in your own town. That will surely keep you motivated. Eat vegetables when you can. I often snack on carrots or baby cucumbers. Snacking on good seeds could be another thing to try, like pumpkin seeds. And eat more nuts, but be careful with the calories because there you could risk to put on weight.
