I hate trying to read between the lines when looking at food labels. The Nannas fruit scare has certainly made those that previously haven’t read labels to start doing so. But how does one determine what the labels are saying. There are many phrases like product of Australia, Made in Australia, Made in Australia from local and imported produce, Australia Owned, Natural, organic, No artificial food colouring etc etc. At the moment my issue is Made in Australia as this does not mean that it is using Australian Produce and the Made in Australia from local and imported ingredients is also telling as a minimal amount of information. Ok so some of it is produce from Australia but it could be 1% for all we know and most do not specify which country the imported ingredients is from. I wish the labels on food are more transparent so we can support those Australian companies who do their best and give 100% Australian food.

  • I agree they are confusing and don’t specify much. It makes it hard when trying to support local.

  • It takes some getting used to, but once you start reading labels, it gets easier to decipher what everything means. It’s worth sticking to it as it’s important to know where our food comes from and exactly what’s on it

  • True. It is harder and harder to buy Australian produce because it is so expensive to grow compared to overseas. I’ve heard talk that some are trying to get a pie chart on packaging to tell you how much of everything comes from where.

  • yep it sound be made as clear as day and i would rather pay more for an australian product grown/raised for australian standards. Our food costs so much due to all the standards that it has to reach

  • Totally agree. I wish they had to disclose where all the ingredients come from.

  • It is good to do some research and be aware of foods and there place of origin; fact sheets can help when shopping.

  • Labels are confusing for sure! I buy at the local farmers market and it removes the confusion about buying Australian products.
