Hello!

My 9 year old plays football and it takes a big commitment from the whole family. Myself and my daughter take him to training Friday nights. My husband and sometimes all of us go to Auskick Saturday mornings. Next is the game Sunday mornings which we all go to (we have to be there to watch him in case he kicks his first goal). Then every second week we have awards night on a Friday night.

Sounds hectic, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. He loves playing and its good for his fitness. My daughter loves socialising with the other sisters who go there. My husband and I have made many good friends through going. I have learnt a few more football rules (although I still don’t understand all of them).

Best of all is the bonding that has become apparent. Some of our school friends are on a different team and we recently played against them. There was a fun sense of rivalry but we were all so happy to see each other and our children out there having a go and enjoying themselves. It was wonderful.

Even when we don’t know the other side I can still appreciate the good skills they have and there is usually a sense of good sportsmanship that abounds. Usually, that is. Unfortunately I have seen a couple of bad eggs, like the father who was too impatient to wait for 5 minutes for a sausage to be cooked by a volunteer parent from his own club, or a side where they boys were trying to trip boys up by the feet. Gladly these incidents are few and far between and I only hope the better sportsmanship continues as my son gets older and plays for older teams. (If his love of football continues.)

I hope others have such positive experiences with their children’s sporting activities.

  • My son does Auskick too. Don’t you love the freezing cold, wet days spent on the sidelines? And the poor kids on these days?!?! Who am I kidding, I love it, he loves it,new all love it!

  • Our weekends are dominated by our three children’s sports. We mostly have positive experiences but I’ve found the higher the grade your child plays in the more seriously the other parents seem to take the sport. Parents need to keep it in perspective, it’s a child’s game played for their enjoyment and fitness not win at all costs.

    • Wise words about parents needing to keep it in perspective,

  • I wouldn’t worry about the rules, I still dont get them all. Some are just silly. I hope he still enjoys it as he gets older. My parents are still involved with out local juniors and my brother stopped playing over 12 years ago
