Just wnated to know how long other mums keep uncooked meat in the freezer for..such as steak and sausages.
I have found if it stays in there too long it affects the taste.
Does anyone know what is recommeded?

  • I have pictures inside the door of my freezer. 2-6 months for pig. 3-4 for fish. 3-6 for chicken. 6-12 for cow. 3-6 for bread. 3-6 for sheep. 6-12 for veggies. 6-12 for fruit. 2-3 for ice cream and 2-3 for food you’ve cooked. I agree the freezing time affects the taste :/

  • Max 6 months as yes it effects the taste

  • Two months is my timeframe. It works with buying meat in bulk. Two months and it is time to re stock the freezer. Make sure meat is sealed in good quality freezer bags; it does make a difference to the quality of frozen meat.

  • I tend to shop for the week, and like others, use up what I have in the freezer before going out to buy more.

However, I have noticed that if their is some hidden meat in the freezer for some time (usually months), it may cause freezer burn – this affecting the meat flavour/quality.

  • how are you packaging it for freezing? in air tight bags, vaccuum seals or plastic containers( this could change the flavour).
I usually don’t buy much chicken, meat etc & buy enough till my next shop, as well as I make sure we consume all the frozen meat up first before I purchase any more. Being forced to use it coz there’s no other types to choose stops you from constantly picking your favourites. If your storing it for less than a month this shouldn’t affect the taste. Poor handling, packaging or maybe the freezer has something wrong with it.
I also remove my meat from the store bought tubs & package into freezer bags, sometimes these can smell funny due to the moisture pads inside

  • I won’t buy much meat, so never need to freeze it. If i do, we usually eat it within 2 months anyhow.

  • My freezer has a guide on the door and tells you how long different things can be frozen. I have never found the taste to be affected! A few farming ladies told me the other day they freeze raw home grown roma tomatoes! I said aren’t they a bit runny when they thaw out and they said a little but they are great for spag bol!

  • We vacuum seal all our meat and have found that it can stay in the fridge for a few days without it being affected

    • Sorry that should be months in the freezer (or days in the fridge I guess!) Whoops

  • There are some good guides online if you google – it’s different for each kind of meat. I probably keep mine too long.
