Hello!

Always a busy mum, I was so tired of cooking an exciting meal, only to have noses turned up right, left and center that I simply gave up. I turned to frozen and pre-packaged food as a way to get dinners eaten and peace at the dinner table.

What I found though, was that eating healthy at breakfast, lunch and snack soon turned into eating healthy at breakfast and lunch, then just breakfast until I opened my pantry and saw nothing that any nutritionist worth their salt would even call food.

It was the wake up call I needed. I looked in the mirror and saw how I truly was- frumpy, bumpy and sad. I was tired and just didn’t feel well. I felt guilty that I wasn’t providing proper meals for my family and they were suffering in their health too.

I began to look online for healthy alternatives to the types of food we were used to- healthy hamburgers, nuggets and chip recipes were a dime a dozen, I soon found, so I set to work. As we had slowly slid into unhealthy eating, I knew we couldn’t just change our diet overnight- the whole reason we were in this mess was because of fussiness-so one meal at a time it was.

The first change I made was to begin baking again, and to choose lower fat and sugar recipes. Slow and steady changes as well as involving the kids in cooking worked better than I could have dreamed.

We now are almost back to where we were, and I am so happy- I have energy, my skin is clearer and Ive even dropped a few kilos. Best of all, I really feel like a ‘good’ mum!

  • Well done. i have to agree. Falling into this trap is easy especially when you have fussy eaters. I used to cook for my family and then someone (namely my daughter) would turn up their nose and i would inevitably cook her something i knew she would eat. (pasta, nuggets and chips etc etc)
Recently I put my foot down and said i just cant keep cooking 2 meals and she knew if she chucked a big enough tantrum I would give in and she would get her won way. So…I know only cook one meal and as i am trying to lose baby weight they are generally very healthy so she either eats it or goes to bed hungry. Yes, its hard sending my kids to bed with nothing (I usually give them milk though) but I am sure she will click one day and just get on with eating.
Im not sure if this is true (although I suspect it is) but i was once told kids will not starve themselves.
