Hello!

i take a few different medicines for high blood pressure, arthritis, high cholesterol, and HRT. I always get asked do you want the generic brand but now Im thinking no. The generic brand is not cheaper and theres no incentive in to choose a generic brand. Its kinda like Im on a pension so Im a second class citizen and dont expect to choose the best for myself. In the future Im going to choose the best medicines. They say theres no difference but there is. They keep promoting them. Im now getting so confused with what each medicine is for as the generic brands are never the same. So Im solving that too.

  • Generic names are the same throughout the world. The brand names differs from country to country. The difference between some of the brands of the same medicine may be the dosage or the combination of medicines in the tablet. The generic name is a more reliable approach to knowing your medicine. The chemist should offer you the generic version. If you compare a generic box next to a branded box, and you will find the active ingredients to be identical. Brands are all about marketing and promotion.

    • Thanks for this answer. It makes sense.

  • Our chemist always offers the generic brand as they are obliged to offer you both-generic and brand and you get to choose-generic or brand. I like having the option to choose and often find the generic brand is cheaper and does the same job. Generic does not mean an inferior product and brand name does not mean a superior product. Brand names often come with a higher cost too! Our chemist always gives us a fact sheet on every medication and prescription. Developing a good relationship with your chemist is important if you have ongoing medical conditions. Our chemist is absolutely wonderful and helpful.

  • I am also finding this too when you get a script and they always offer the generic. Sometimes I say ok and sometimes I want the prescribed one!

  • Ask your doctor. In many cases there IS no difference, and you might as well save money. Also, price check different pharmacies. Some charge twice as much for the same prescription.

  • I am in the medical field and generic brands are exactly the same as name brands. They use the exact same ingredients. It costs less because you are not paying for the “brand” that is attached to it. I always take generic brands and am always asked to choose no matter what chemist I go to. Hope this helps

  • Depends on which chemist you go to, the one I go to explained to me that the medication I take generic brand is exactly the same, from the same company just different packaging and over $10 difference. He said if I wasn’t happy with the generic he would refund me, I now only choose the generic brand.

    • I have also received a refund when I returned something I tried and had a reaction. No questions; just an immediate refund. The possible reactions was listed on the medication sheet printed out by the chemist.
