Over the past week I have learnt that the government is ceasing to pay EMA payements, for parents in the Year 2015. This money is what most single parents use to pay for their childrens education. Unfortunatley I believe that it is children that will suffer from their parents not recieving this money. Whilst polititions have enough income to be able to afford private schooling, for their children not all parents are able to. This could result in children not having new uniforms or limited educational entertainment, for our future generation; I think governments need to re access what the result of children growing up in poverty might me! All While parents now have to provide ipads, for learning.

  • Government cuts are unbelievable aren’t they? Cut essentials for every day people while the pollys still flounce around in private cars, trips overseas, gourmet dinners et etc etc They need to start the cuts in their own pockets for a change

  • EMA is the Education Maintenance Allowance paid by the Victorian Government to help with education related costs to low income families.

    • Thanks for explaining the meaning of EMA.

  • it is all totally wrong and unfair in so many ways and taking from those who can lease afford it and basically living on the poverty line as it is. Those who think it is the right thing are those who can afford things to start with and do not really struggle in the full sense of the word struggle

  • so agree, also a single parent finding things hard enough as it is. pretty sad that we are forced to live on such crumbs while the pollies are getting yearly bonuses. ive tried to work full time, but after daycare and babysitters ended up only $30 a week better off, then still have to find time to do my own household chores on top. i can understand that some families can do without these payments but for single parents its only going to make us struggle more.

  • Reverse Robin Hoods, that’s our government. Take from the poor & struggling, to make up for what the rich don’t pay. It’s about time that multi-national businesses paid fair tax on their massive profits, along with some of the wealthiest people who have accountants to minimize the amount of tax they pay. Then it might make more of a level playing field for those people who want to give their children the advantages that only the wealthiest can afford.

  • Im sure many of you will disagree with me but…….
I do understand that it is hard to keep giving money hand over fist for schooling but on the other hand we decided to have the children and its our choice to put the child in private or public schooling.
Not all schools require the children to have ipads i have 4 children 3 at private school 1 at kindy my older 3 dont have ipads for school but do have laptops which the school pay for we only pay if they break or damage them.
I guess the government had to save money from somewhere.

  • Thanks everyone it’s difficult when governments cut funding then expect parents to provide expensive iPads for out children to learn from.

  • What is EMA payments? And this government has a habit of taking from the poor giving to the rich. Its just not fair. We (as a nation) however voted them in and now need to pay the price. Its not fair and I can see the divide widening further.

  • Totally agree with you, its so unfair and its the poor kids that miss out.

  • it’s a case of take from the poor and give to the rich. Cut the rule makers money back and things would be fair better off. They take from people who can not afford to lose any money and this will affect children as it means the difference between them having all there books and uniforms and paying school levies.
Take there free plane trips and cars and thing off them and let them pay for their own expenses they should cut their income before others as they are the ones that can afford it.
They make these cuts with out having to live like it them selves and than have the cheek to say it fair for all. Give them all a realistic wage to live on and there would be no debt.
All they are doing is kicking the fallen in the guts with out ever walking in their shoes which I think every one of them should have to live on a center link payment for 12 months and have some real insight before cutting people who find it harder and harder to scrap by and than look at who they can take money from

    • couldn’t have said it better myself, kick in the guts is what it is.

  • This government make me very mad with the fact they want to cut funding to schools, medical care and the old. If all of them cut there unnecessary huge salary in half indefinitely then the budget will be in great shape! They say cuts are not going to please everyone but how are they suffering?

    • Medicare has been cut to the extreme where I live. They now have a small office in with centrelink that is in a difficult place for many to access, including the elderly with hardly any parking available and not very accessible. Whether or not people agree with religious education in schools that is another one that has been axed. Who knows what else is to come. I realise that the over spending of the last government couldn’t go on but I’ve seen a few things lately that are starting to make me think that perhaps they are going about trying to recoup finances way too quickly and in some of the more needy areas. I know the huge payouts from the previous government did some damage but I certainly see a big reduction in services. I went into centrelink recently in regards to child are rebate and it was like walking into a ghost town.

  • It certainly doesn’t seem balanced and fair to me.

  • Yes I agree the children are going to suffer whilst big business will thrive.
