Hello!

I like cooking but can’t always afford or get the fresh herbs required for some dishes. A friend of mine who is a chef, has advised me that generally it is okay to use dried herbs in place of fresh herbs. He just said to remember that dried herbs can be stronger than fresh herbs so as a general rule use 1/3 third of dried herbs to the quantity of fresh herbs. I’ll be stocking up the pantry now!

  • We always waste lots of fresh herbs, so thanks.

  • I’ve always done this (other than when we have had a veggie garden going) and they generally are just as good. Just not so good for a garnish

  • I’ve always kept a little herb garden – you could probably set one up for $30 with all the regular faves and most herbs are pretty hardy and (almost) impossible to kill and then provide unlimited free herbs thereon out. Definitely suggest giving it a go if you have the time =)

  • Also, using dried herbs usually means your cooking time is less.

  • Yep, I never really have fresh herbs on hand, I have a massive assortment of dried though, another friend gave me a tip that when you do happen to buy fresh herbs and you don’t use it all, chop them and freeze them in olive oil in ice cube trays, when you need them you can just use it in the frypan, I have only done it once, but its brilliant!

  • Sometimes the supermarket will have reduced herbs or have them on sale I will buy them in bulk when they do and I freeze them. It’s a great way to save money and get fresh herbs cheap. I also like to buy and grow them at home a never ending supply.

  • That is very true! You can also grow them yourself! Usually the markets have them for around $2 each
