Hello!

I grew up hearing stories of how bad of a time my Mum had when pregnant with me. The nausea that happened throughout the day, the aversion to the smell or look of red meat, high blood pressure, the tiredness and the how the constipation developed piles. Being pregnant sounded to my young ears like it was one of the worse times in your life and my Mum’s experience and subsequent horrible time in hospital meant that I remained an only child.

But, after meeting a wonderful man and despite being in our 40’s and me being diagnosed with poly-cystic ovaries, I became pregnant after 12 months of hoping and 6 months of reconciling ourselves to it not happening. Luckily the first trimester had almost passed before I even knew! Minor symptoms that had been attributed to other reasons suddenly took a whole new meaning, and I had none of what my Mum had previously described.

Now at 8 months, I can confidently say that history doesn’t always repeat, because my pregnancy has been great and I have experienced only minor issues. When I first told people that I was pregnant all the horror stories came out and I was told that my age would make it tougher on me. Well, it’s nice to share that age doesn’t necessarily make a difference, as my 21 year old Mum’s experience pregnancy was certainly a lot different to my 43 year old one!

  • Glad to hear yours wasn’t like your mum’s, and it’s absolutely true that history doesn’t always repeat itself. Thanks for sharing.

  • I agree that everyone and every pregnancy is different. Some people are blessed with smooth sailing and others are not. As a sufferer of pregnancies that haven’t been ideal I am thankful that there are at least some women who don’t suffer like I have. Good luck with your birth and child.

  • Everyone is different and it does not always follow the same path in families. Each pregnancy is unique and individual.

  • Good for you! I can also confirm history doesn’t always repeat itself. My parents were distant and reserved, I vowed to not be like them. I had little to do with them when I became an adult and left home. Happy to say, my kids are adults, left home and I have such a great relationship with them. I’m so happy history didn’t repeat!

  • My Mum always told me about MY terrible birth… It wrecked her. My older sis was delivered breach, and that was not a problem… I wrecked her! I have made sure that my children NEVER hear a negative about my pregnancy’s or deliveries … I even proudly tell them about my stretch marks.

  • You always seem to hear about the bad stuff and never the good!

    • We do need to share the positives too – you are quite right.

  • You always seem to hear more horror stories than good! I had no problems during my pregnancy and my labour wasn’t as bad as everyone made out….sure it hurt but I was lucky to have a quick labour (didn’t even make it to hospital!).

  • This is a great story to remind ALL of us to be very mindful of what we tell our children because our ‘innocent’ stories can taint future attitudes to something that should be a wonderful part in a mother’s life. Thanks for sharing.

  • I happy its gone so well for you. Good luck for the arrival of the new baby. Everyone’s experience is different and it can be hard not to scare each other with stories of bad experiences while just trying to b informed.

  • first of all Congrats to you! but all pregnant women have different times of it and each one you have is different. I was allergic to my own pregnancy with my first and was cover from head to tow in a rash for the whole time. It was the fluid she was in that my problem was with so needless to say I was worried about my second but I did not have this with him mined you I had lots of the other with both of them and every time I fell pregnant I felt different. My Daughter was different to me she never passed out had little vomiting ect and to stop her from feeling sick she just had to eat. She did not put on much weight and went in to labour on her own something I have never done and my waters do not break on there own and hers did so no what your Mum went through does not mean you ever will

  • Each person and each pregnancy is unique, that’s all you have to remember.

  • Everyone’s experience is unique. My mother breezed through all of her pregnancies but I really struggled and had preeclampsia. She breastfed so easily, whereas I struggled.

    • Expectant Mums deserve respect the same as others do, not to be plagued with genuine or sometimes exaggerated issues. People forget that no two babies are the same too. Some feed better than others, do things at different ages and Mums brag about it.

  • Indeed every person and every pregnancy is different :) I think it’s human nature to want to tell all the horror stories because, lets face it, saying “I had no symptoms my whole pregnancy” isn’t a very exciting story :P but congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck with the birth :)
