Hello!

My child has just had a fairly major operation (about 3 hours in surgery) and I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar hospital experience like us. We are (thankfully) a fairly healthy family so we do not have much to do with the health sector. This operation was unavoidable and was to fix a problem that my child was born with. The inconsistency in the the nursing staff is amazing. There were nurses who were just amazing, professional and competent and then there are some who you begin to wonder, where did they get their qualification from. How can we be sure that all nurses (and doctors for that matter) are properly qualified and trained? It is extremely scary when you see how unprofessional a health worker is and they are administering medication to your child. You would think that hospitals only employ properly qualified personnel but I remember reading about cases here where the medical personnel had been barred and yet the hospital was not aware of it. Hospital security is also something I worry about. I was not prepared for my child to stay in the hospital alone as anyone could walk in and do whatever. Does anyone here work in the health industry and know how patient security is ensured?

  • they aren’t secure, you should try and supervise at all times! yes staff are trained but we are human and mistakes can and will happen

  • I would be complaint to the hospital. You should expect nothing but consisitant professionalism from all of them

    • I really hate complaining but I don’t see how they can fix a problem if people do not complain. I might wait till my child is fully healed first as we are still trying to recover from the surgery. Having a child sore, swollen and tired from surgery is so hard.

  • I have had multiple experiences In multiple hospitals. I am convinced many of the nurses are only interested in seeing how little work they can get away with doing. They don’t care about patient welfare. And many are idiots. Once, I gave a nurse my four week old baby to hold (I was the patient), and said “I’ve just fed her, she might spit up”. When my daughter spit up less than a teaspoon full of milk, the nurse screamed so loudly, other nurses came running.

    • Some of the nurses – especially the night nurses – are exactly as you say.

  • Thank you for sharing and glad your child ops went well. Hospitals are unavoidable , I mean who wants to go -no-one !. Normally children are grouped together in the rooms together so very surprised she was alone . I know if it is a private room normally they are alone and it could be a blessing too without the noise and bother of other people. Normally there are shift nurses /docs there a lot of times just the one person . Maybe bring this issue up at the time and ask of this is normal and what security measures are in place. If I am curious enough I will ask so I wont worry too much . I am sure they are covered for all circumstances .

  • Thanks for sharing this interesting story. Mine was in hospital at age 4. I insisted I stay the night and was given a highly uncomfortable chair. She was in for 2 nights. I was glad I was there – nothing in particular happened, but she wasn’t used to being alone and I could talk her through what was being done to her and raft of other related questions. I agree totally on your staging concerns!

    • Forgot to say – I hope everything was fine and your child is all better now.

      • We are home now and she is feeling better at home than in hospital. I can also care for her better at home. I feel so restricted at the hospital. At home I can adapt meals, snacks and drinks which she like so she can eat better. Being able to sleep better at home is a real plus. Those plastic mattresses and pillows are so uncomfortable. I also think that my child should have been in a paediatric ward rather than a general ward. I just wasn’t comfortable having her in a single room with adults in all the other single rooms. Anyone could have just walked off the street and just enter her room/ward. I reckon I would be worried about my own safety if I was in a similar single room and I am an adult!!
