Hello!

I am writing this as I would like people to understand that my son may have moderate intellectual learning difficulties but sometimes I just wish people would treat him as a normal person as he is 17 going on 18 and the teachers at his school keep saying this is too hard or that is too hard. Now he is confused and doesn’t know what to do when he leaves school as he thinks he is too stupid and everything is going to be too hard

  • That is do not the role of a teacher! They should be providing information and support for whatever your son wishes to do. It’s then up to your son to decide if it’s too hard or not. I’m sure there’s done thing out there for him, he just needs to find it. Good luck

  • I would reach out to a theropist that can help you point your son in the right direction. There are also some charities or groups that employ people with issues like your son has, it might be in a coffee shop etc and they train people and give them the confidence to be able to work in the trade. Yes they know people have issues and allow for that. Also the words to hard or can not should not be used to dscribe things tabout or to your son.

  • All teachers need to have high expectations for their students. Do not listen to these two teachers and encourage your child to aim high. Teachers can only advise and ultimately do what works best for your son. I know of many people that have been told they were not capable of study and have then proven people wrong! Most teachers are supportive and encouraging.

    • Get advice from a school careers counsellor too – they can be a great support.

      • Exactly, all teachers should teach their pupils to strive harder to achieve their absolute maximum potential, plus it’s a good formula help you through life -imagine if everyone was taught not to go for that job because it might be too hard or test them etc

  • I would be talking to the teachers too. Is there a councillor at school that can help give your son some confidence back
