Hello!

Last week I had a mega-housework day – cleaning areas I haven’t touched for many months – beginning with the shower. The soap scum was very stubborn but after a while – having tried lots of different things – the scum began to come off, even from the floor tiles!

The mold was more stubborn. It became obvious that I wasn’t going to get things perfect. At least not that day. We’ll probably have to do some major work to fix the shower up and/or win some miracle spray from the Mouths of Mum’s website!

As I resigned myself to the fact the shower wasn’t going to be perfect I was also impressed with what a difference SOME cleaning had made. It was way better than nothing. I realized that every little bit makes a difference – even if it’s not perfect.

With that mindset I tackled some more jobs (like the dust on the tops of the fans!), not necessarily doing them perfectly, but doing something. And eventually I realized that I was making a HUGE difference about the house – even though I wasn’t doing things perfectly.

I realized that I might have been putting off jobs because I was wanting to do them perfectly. An old saying I remember from childhood went something like “if a job’s worth doing then it’s worth doing well” (based on the number of jobs I avoid you might have the impression that I don’t consider many housework tasks worth doing!)

But now I think I’ve found some liberation in the thought that I don’t need to do things PERFECTLY – even a little makes a difference. A job might be worth doing but if you are seeking perfection, and just don’t have the time or inclination, then chances are you will leave it. That’s a shame. A little can still make a difference.

  • When it comes to housework I just do a bit at a time. And the spray on foam works pretty well on shower scum.
