Hello!

On the 8th of January 2014 at 39.1 weeks i was admitted into hospital to have my daughter induced as all the aches and pains were proving too much for me to handle for any longer and my husband works away in Port Hedland WA in the mines so i needed to make sure i had her while he was home so he didn’t miss her arrival!
My husband flew in from work on the Tuesday night arriving Wednesday night and meeting me at the hospital ready for a new experience as my last 2 births were spontaneous.
The midwives took me up to a room to put me on the fetal monitor to see if everything was well and also checked all other vitals etc. I had been getting Braxton Hicks since around 18 weeks and they were quite intense most of the time and again that day i was getting quite a few of them while doing my last bit of organising and shopping before i was in hospital so i didn’t think anything of it as it was ‘normal’ for me. After being on the fetal monitor for around half an hour the nurse asked me if i was in any pain and i replied with ‘no, just discomfort and tightening from the Braxton hicks contractions.’ She told me that she believed i was actually having labour contractions and they would see what happened over the next 30 minutes but the way things were looking i may not need to be induced!
Well, within 30 minutes i went from a little discomfort to hunching over and squeezing my pillow in pain… They did another internal and i had gone from 2cm dilated to 7cm dilated in an hour and was most definitely in full labour now. They told me i had to move to the delivery room as quick as i could (they made me walk all the way, stopping having intense contractions along the way).
Once getting into the delivery room things moved along very quickly, very fast and intense! I had a very bad experience with my previous (2nd) birth with feeling absolutely everything so my husband and i demanded they arrange an epidural for me so i wasn’t so distressed. They told me they had arranged it but the anaesthetist was doing a c-section and then had another one straight after that so he may not make it to me in time as things were moving very quickly with my labour. This was quite distressing for me as i’m not one for pain and was really starting to struggle. They put me leaning up over the bed head to try to get her moving and that was horrible… I felt like i had to push so i asked to be put back laying on my back. I told them i feel like i need to push so they did another internal which showed i was 9cm dilated. They said to me the good news is your 9cm so are ready to have your baby but the bad news is it’s too late to have your epidural! I was a little upset but accepted it and asked for them to at least numb my bottom so i was a little more comfortable, which they did! My husband and i have a thing where we dislike odd numbers and my favourite number is 8 so i was hoping she would be born on that day not on the next day being the 9th. After a couple of pushes they said they thought i may tear so as i requested they tried to do an episiotomy and during this time they told me i couldn’t push as my babies head was right there. This was impossible as my body had an overwhelming urge to push, i had to pant and really concentrate to get through it and after all that time they said they were unable to give me an episiotomy as her head was too close and it was too dangerous. Finally i was able to push again and our beautiful angel was born at 11:12pm on the 8th January. She is the only girl out of 5 kids… We have 4 boys between us so she is the apple of all our eyes!! It still amazes me to this day that i went into hospital that night to be induced and ended up having a spontaneous birth! The midwives said to me that the woman’s body and unborn babies work in mysterious ways and that because we knew my husband had safely arrived in Melbourne and was here my body relaxed and our baby just knew it was time to come into the world because daddy was here!! It’s simply beautiful how it all turned out. Hubby didn’t miss her arrival and she was born on my favourite number day!! A very fast and intense labour of only 3 hours and 20 minutes but i wouldn’t change anything about it. So in love with my little Sienna Rose.

  • The woman’s body is most definitely something to be in awe of. The human body in general is something that’s do special, what it’s capable of is beyond amazing
