Hello!

For many years I have disregarded the opinion of those who champion epsom salt baths. I was closed minded and biased! I could not see how soaking in hot water could do anything for me, or anyone else, other than perhaps waste some time – and if that sort of thing makes you feel better – well good luck to you!

But I’ve recently had a 180 degree change of mind! I’ve been at the end of my tether with muscular aches and pains – not helped by wanting to get fit and run/cycle (because I always seem to over do it!) and as a last resort I tried an epsom salt bath. I loved it!

The epsom salts made a real difference to my muscle recovery. Those days I didn’t ‘recover’ using it I found muscles were achy and stiff the next. Those days I did bother to soak my legs were good to go again the next day.

I read about the magnesium content of the salts and learned that small enough ions, or particles of magnesium, can be absorbed through the skin, and go to help the function of the muscle. Waste products from exercise are removed (seemed to be called ‘detox’ in some places) and calcium absorption is enhanced.

I also learned that magnesium is an important mineral that is often not present in the diets we eat, and if it is, some people can have trouble absorbing it. Even magnesium supplements may not be absorbed and there is a delicate balance between the calcium and iron and magnesium that we eat, and too much of one can inhibit the absorption of another. I began to wonder if I’ve been magnesium deficient for years!

I’ve surprised myself with my change of mind and discovery that epsom salts are working for me! I think they would have helped when I was younger too, only I was too closed minded then to bother to try them!

Next time someone tells you to try an epsom salt bath please keep an open mind and try one (or more – apparently if you are deficient in magnesium it can take a while to feel a difference). You never know, they might help you as well one day!

  • I have used Epsom salts quite a while back but alas I could probably with a bit of effort get into a bath but there is no way in the wide world I could manage to get back out now.
Glad you have discovered the wonderful benefits of Epsom salts and that it is working so well for you.
