With two young kids at home full time, I feel like I never have a clean and tidy house! I swear it’s like taking two steps forward and one step back most of the time. My 15 month old can wreak havoc on a room in about 27 seconds flat!

It got me thinking, being organised is key, and I like to plan out jobs to do each day to break up the housework, and so that I have a plan for the day. Sometimes it’s easier to tackle a job when you are focused on one thing, rather than the whole house looming on you! I also like to plan our meals for the week so that it’s not a guessing game every night.

What is your number one tip for staying organised around the house?

  • My daughter has just started a Mon-Fri, 9-5 job and complains about spending her 2 days off doing housework. I’m trying to get her to do a job or 2 each day after work. It doesn’t take long and come to her days off, housework is done

  • Getting out of the house for a few hours reduces the amount of time that they can wreck havoc in the house (from 27 seconds to 15). Buy plastic tubs with handles where toys can be thrown in and put out of the way quickly. I clean up in the evening or pick up as I go. Your children aren’t going to change any time soon, you have to change your expectations.

  • The best thing I have ever done to help me get a more organised house was to do a really honest audit of all our things and the throw out or give half of it away. Now everything actually has a home and that makes tidying a whole lot easier.

  • Clean up as you go. For me this is the number one tip. And don’t accumulate work. Don’t accumulate washing, ironing… Then it just becomes too much.

  • I pretty much am like you, a 9 year old daughter who has no sense of cleanliness and a 16 month old son who is more like a tornado through the house than a boy. I also separate it into separate jobs on different days, last night was my kitchen day, scrub the benches, cupboards, stove top etc. Tonight the dining room tidy up. I also have a fortnightly menu, I write down what we will have each fortnight and only buy what we need.

  • I wish I was more organised lol I like to do the washing of a morning to get that out of the way, make the beds and then vacuum. Other than that i wing it, picking up toys mainly at night and dishes done after dinner.

  • Being flexible as you never know what might come up and instead of being put out that I didn’t get the loads of washing out first thing in the morning because of lets say for example the little one threw a hissy fit of epic proportions that demanded my full attention to reign the situation back in! sigh I settled for fixing the kitchen up first before proceeding to the outside work. I mean sure the washing won’t have adequate drying time but it’s out :-)

  • yes i agree to do the housework in manageable parts vs being overwhelmed at all the mess! i do a thorough house clean every monday, everything gets bleached. I try to tidy up before bedtime or first thing in the morning, usually both! washing up dishes after every meal and rubbish out. Vac everyday. Wash clothes everyday.


    • Breaking work into manageable parts is definitely important and the only way to get through it!
