Hello!

We as mothers have many guilty concerns and a couple of these may include; am I socialising my baby enough? and am I getting enough exercise? You know when baby starts spending more time giggling into the mirror and you find your self slipping back into your maternity tights with more frequency and less concern…time to get out, move that butt and find your baby some actual interactive friends! Most babies come with pretty nice mothers too. Its nice to have an adult conversation with someone who is often equally as sleep deprived as you who will not stare distractedly at that smear of baby food/vomit/snot? on your top, the one that you couldn’t be bothered changing again after the first two attempts at dressing yourself that morning.

So on my quest for health, fitness and baby love I came across the latest in postnatal exercise, direct from Europe (no seriously most Google results are in german) and as chance had it the next term of classes was starting that week, but positions were limited, bookings essential..so I booked in, for a term! and then I googled it, on YouTube…

Now I’m a reasonably fit person, I’m no marathon runner or weight lifter but I’m healthy and active, but the images I was viewing reminded me a little too much of 80’s Fonda..a babywearing Fonda, in toe curling fluro. The number of times I picked up the phone to cancel were many, not only did I fear the super coordinated, toned & manically happy looking women with their cute quiet babies but I had trouble envisioning my child remaining quiet smack bang in the middle of her designated nap time I’d been working on developing for months.

But I sucked in my fears (and my tummy) packed sophie the BPA free Giraffe and off we went, hoping the smell of baby Bjorn did not linger with us. (Thankfully most Kanga classes have Manduca or ergo carriers that are available to borrow for the class) And we loved it…perhaps the most surprising thing (apart from the discovery of muscles I’d almost forgotten I had) was spending two hours with 12 babies ranging from 3 months to two years..and not hearing a single cry! there was a reason the women in the videos looked manically happy, they had found the key to quiet happy sleeping babies, strap them to your body and Mambo, vigorously, with loud music!

Needless to say I’m now a convert, the classes are lovely, the people; fantastic mothers just like you or I, the bubs adorable, yes even when raiding your bag and toddling off on bandy legs with your keys and the workout!… cardiovascular endurance/flexibility and muscular capacity/strength are all enhanced, and there is special attention given to the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles..just try not to make eye contact during the group pelvic floor exercises…that can be awkward.

  • That sounds like so much fun! I’m sure I could borrow a baby from someone.

  • Thanks for sharing. I have similar experience and totally understand where you’re coming from. You just lose track of yourself easily once you have a baby. As long as you’re all healthy it’s all that matters!
