Hello!

So, my mild mannered, usually helpful mother in law has come to stay and it seems like overnight she has turned into a she-devil! In what world can you come into my happy home, and criticise the way I keep my house?! In what world can you tell a frazzled mum who hasn’t had any me-time in YEARS that she’s not doing enough, and needs to try harder?! What has gotten in to her head? I used to smile when other people complained about their in laws, knowing that I had good ones – not any more, now I just nod knowingly!

  • Is there possibly anything she may be dealing with personally and this is how she is coping or reacting by criticizing you and behaving differently? Maybe try to talk to her and see if there is something bothering her. Good luck :)

  • Are you sure she was always ” mild mannered, usually helpful ” ? I am not sure why but my mother is the same . She has been unstable like this for most of her life ( prob from past events and undiagnosed issues etc ) and my MIL is passive and sacrificing that it gets too much . Due to our culture , this is very common and it sounds like it could be her upbringing and she probably doesn’t even know she is doing it . You can also tell because she may talk without thinking of your feelings constantly , and their comments are so direct that it might even tear you apart if you are not careful . Yes nod , but feel right to express yourself anytime as suppression will make you ill and resentful . It has only been the last few years that I have learnt to deal with it well .

  • How bizarre she flipped a switch. Hopefully she’ll flip back? I’m have lovely in laws, hope they stay that way! You’re right, she has no right to judge. Since she didn’t say nice things I will… Good job mum! You run a great house!

  • It would have been for you to have received some help around the house; rather than being judged!

    • Oops should read: It would have been NICE for you to have received some help around the house; rather than being judged! :)

  • Unfortunately; relationships can change over time.

  • Sounds all a bit strange if she’s usually ‘normal and nice’.
