Hello!

The day hubby and I had the diagnosis of ASD with our oldest son we were devastated. We knew something was wrong with him when he was about 15 months old. After going to the doctor we got the referral for the paediatrician who then gave us the forms for hearing and blood tests. By this stage we were hoping he was deaf as we thought that would be a lot easier to deal with.

No, his hearing was fine. When he was 2 years and nine months, and with six month old twins by this stage were told ‘Yes he has autism”. We grieved for our lost hopes and dreams for him which took time. I took it especially hard because all I could think about was what I did wrong during the pregnancy. Our paediatrician was fantastic, doing everything he could possibly do for us.

Every milestone for him takes so much effort that when he achieves something it’s like a miracle. He said his first word when he was 5, and “mummy” when he was 5 1/2. I cried. Toilet training was also achieved when he was 5. It’s still not perfect as he still has trouble with his bowel movements, and we don’t know if he will ever get full control, but he’s out of nappies at least.

He’s almost 9 now. We don’t think about what if. He’s my gorgeous blonde baby boy who’s growing up way too fast, has a heartbreakingly beautiful smile, loves computers, loves being read to and is starting to read books himself – Dinosaurs are his absolute favourite. He goes to a Special School and his teachers are absolutely amazing. We love him to pieces and we are doing everything we can for him, which is what every parent does for their child.
