Hello!

As my kids put it in their own words, “we don’t play with you because we don’t like the things you want to do”. At the moment that consists of anything to do with My Little Pony. Seeing an article on here about friendship bracelets, I thought what a great idea to do something with the girls 5 and 8. They seemed excited by the idea but as soon as I sat down to make them they were no where to be seen.

Sadly they’d rather spend time playing the xbox than spend time with their sad old mum. I suppose it’s my fault for being the parent that’s never there. Full time study has kept me busy. They are used to amusing themselves while mummy does homework. Now as hard as I try they just aren’t interested in spending time with me. I try to make them yummy things and involve them in the cooking but nothing seems to get through to them. I’m lucky if I get an occasional hug or even a hello when the eldest gets home from school. I’m trying to find ways to spend more quality time with them, but we’re just finding it hard to reconnect after I’ve been partly absent for so long.

  • I would suggest packing away and limiting any play on devices at this age. Setting up set play times and play dates with your kids may help. Explain the rules to the kids; no devices and everyone participates for a set amount of time. Organising an activity away from home may assist with getting their full attention too. Importantly; make the activity or outing fun too! :)

  • Remove the x box and other such devices and even the television. A five and eight years of age, you will be able to get through to them…once the tantrums stop. Get some easy to play board games. Sing songs with them all what they have missed while you were planning survival.study and what you need to for a better future for them.
Do you have room to have a garden or pot plant gardens. You will find they may like growing vegetables, or strawberries etc
Take them to the library, they can find the books that you can read to them.,swimming
on picnics camping there are so many activities. If you do have a yard where you can raise chickens they will have fun caring for them with you and eventually have eggs.
Or take them to a farm. Many farms are close to cities and with some searching, you will find one that will welcome you. You may also adopt a Nanna and visit and take on outings. You need to take this opportunity to reconnect with them don’t let this chance go by. They will be all grown up teenagers before you know it and they need to have a solid trusting relationship with you then, you set the foundation for that now.
As you said you bought them the gadgets so now you can take them away. You can become the mother they deserve. You go girl!
