Hello!

It has been several months now since I have been back to work. I have started by just doing 2 days a week and I thought I would share how we are all coping now I am back.

For myself I am loving it. Contributing financially is a great feeling for me, I also really enjoy my job as a beauty therapist. There is a lot of variety in my day and it is also very social. I do find the mornings before work very full on, trying to get myself and 2 girls ready in time is exhausting in itself, but we make it work. If I can get my bum into gear and be super organised the morning routine does run a lot smoother, but telling myself this every night before work doesn’t seem to always sink in!

One thing I have noticed since returning to work is I have lost the art in making conversation. It is like becoming a Mum & staying home for that period of time has dumbed down my experience in being an adult. My hot topic of conversation with clients is the weather! THE WEATHER PEOPLE! If my client doesn’t have an exciting life to talk about I go into great depth about how much rain we are having or how hot or cold it is. Or I spend a lot of time talking about the girls, which lets be honest, most people aren’t really that interested in hearing about my girls sleeping, eating or pooping habits. They are happy to see a cute photo of them, hear one maybe two funny stories and move on.

Whilst I am loving being back the Mum guilt does take over some days, these tiny people really do know how to pull at your heart strings. There are some mornings Georgia says she wants to stay home with me or she starts saying all the cute things like she loves me (without me having to say it first).

Another problem we are all struggling with is sickness. We’ve all had several colds, tonsillitis, gastro, the girls had hand, foot & mouth and in the past few months every second week Lauren has had an ear infection. I know this is what happens to kids when they are first exposed to day care, but my goodness it has been bad. Lauren has caught every possible germ in that place that she possibly could. This is something that has been a very big frustration for Mark and I, and I’m sure a lot of other parents too. If your kids are sick please don’t send them to day care or school! And the same goes for you if you are trying to cough up a lung and have an endless stream of green snot dripping out of your nose, don’t go to work, you’re not a hero sharing your grossness and germs with everyone there.

I am glad to be back at work and starting to feel like the ‘old me’ again but it does come with its own challenges, mainly learning how to speak to adults again instead of only children. But it is worth it, definitely hard but still worth it.

  • I’m sure the art of adult conversation will come back to you. It is always hard when you are surrounded by little people to change one’s demeanour back to adult talk. Good luck.

  • How wonderful it’s been a successful transition (even if challenging!)
I know what you mean about the art of conversation. I’m always listening to others conversations to note what they talk about, it is a skill we can relearn!
