my 2 year old started screaming in bed the other night I thought maybe she had a bad dream she had her eyes wide open with a real fear look in them no matter what I did she just kept screaming when I tried to hold her she was hitting me and pushing my face away it totally scared me it was like she was having a fit or seing something horrible that I couldnt then after a good half hour she stopped and was then alert and wide awake with no reminder of what just happened I read it is common for toddlers to have night terrors and to be actually in a deep sleep still with there eyes open I just pray she never has another night terror as I was so close to rushing her to hospital

  • We’ve not long gone down this track too. I was told by a General Practice Nurse at our local Medical Centre that at around that age of later little ones develop a very strong imagination and have night terrors. We went through a stage of it during the night time toilet training process too. I recently childsat a friend’s little. She sat in the morning and cried. Eventually she told me that her Mum had promised to get her some particular treat as it had all been eaten – not just by her. When her Mum came to collect her I was able to warn her before the little one came out and cried ‘Mummy you promised to buy more……….” . She had to explain to her that she had a dream. Luckily the Mum was planning to buy some more the next day when they did the weekly shopping. Luckily it was a healthy food not junk – not that they are given much junk apart from the odd treat.

  • I Havent experienced This, However I Was Watching That Show The Doctors. And One Of Them Was Talking About Night Terrors And How To Prevent Them. If They Are Regular They Say To Make A Log For Around The Time They Happen. After A Week Or 2 Depending On How regular they Are, Average The Time That It Happens. Then For A Week Or 2 Wake Up Ur Child Fully Awake For 15 Mins And Then Put Them Back To Bed. From What They Say This Should Help And Possibly Get Rid Of Them. I Cant Say This Works As I Have Never experienced It But Anything Is Worth A Shot Spesh When It Comes To Your children.

  • I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old boy who have both had night terrors. The 5 year old has grown out of it but the 2 year old currently gets them. A doctor told me that it was night terrors- unfortunately there’s no treatment- you just have to stick it out :-). Ther eldest one would scream for 4-5 hours and run around the house screaming. You just have to try to keep them safe and wait for them to wake up- they have their eyes open but are not really aware of anything and have no recollection of it once they wake up. We just try to cuddle them until its over. One thing Ive noticed is that the terrors are worse when there’s major changes going on. …

  • Hi, night terrors are so frightening! My eldest son who is now 13, used to have them regularly when he was a toddler. Sometimes they would last for only a couple of minutes, sometimes longer. He would sit up in bed in a panic, panting and crying and trying to verbalise his fear, but when I asked him what was wrong, or what he could see, he didn’t hear me – he would look right through me and that is a very freaky experience! But as scary as it was for me, he never seemed to remember any of it, and once it had passed he would lay back down and go to sleep – over the years they became less and less until he grew out of them completely. I do feel for you, as I remember how helpless I used to feel, but know that your daughter is safe, you are there with her, and hopefully she will grow out of them in time too.
