Hello!

My small grandson Nikalos couldn’t stop smiling on Christmas day, he had been given a Peewee 50cc motorbike, and he was only five but loved it! His parents purchased all the necessary safety gear and he was dressed up like a little professional as they spent the next few days showing him how to ride, brake, stop and slow down. He wasn’t allowed just yet to ride it on his own. Nikalos was beside himself with happiness as I watched him as him hop on and sit on his bike for a photo. He is tall and thin with a pixieness quality about his features, tiny delicate bones even fragile or perhaps feminine looking. I recall as a small baby his nostrils were so tiny and prefect, just a delicate child with milky white skin.
The day after Boxing Day as I worked the telephone rang. ‘Hello’ I answered. It was Nikalos’s father. ‘Nikalos has had an accident um oh he’s hurt the ambulance is on its way’ his voice was shaking and my heart jumped to my throat. ‘Is he alright?’ I cried. ‘I don’t know it’s like his face has been ripped off!’ My hands shook as I rang my husband to meet them at the Mater children’s hospital. A rapid Response team ambulance had picked him up and a team of eight waited at the hospital. I shook and shook, not Nikalos, not his tiny fragile bones and delicate face. I think I was dying inside. I raced to the hospital after my son in law explained he’d been on the bike with him and Nikalos pushed the throttle too fast took off and left his father standing, he hit a divot in the paddock sailed up in the air as his little body flayed around like a rag doll, he had become part of the bike. The handle bars and front brake had wedged up under the front of the helmet ripping his face. Nikalos finally came crashing down in a ditch! Oh my god was all I kept thinking oh my god, Nikalos please be alright. Then my daughter rang from the hospital as I was on my way, ‘he may need plastic surgery’ she said. ‘Prepare yourself when you get here he’s not a pretty sight. My heart sat in my throat….
I walked into the hospital room to see my little grandson laying on a big white bed a neck brace on and tubes everywhere, his prefect tiny face was swollen up like a soccer ball and blood was oozing from his mouth, his little dark eyes were slits as I moved to the top of the bed so he could see me. He had two black eyes. His lips were swollen and ripped and he had a puncture wound on his left arm. Oh no please, please make him be okay I kept praying. I gingerly touched the top of his head, ‘Nikalos, nanny’s here.’ He opened his eyes through a morphine induced sleep and lifted his little hand for me to hold as nurses and doctors came in did ultrasounds on him Ct scans, x-rays and all the time not complaining once.
Later that night they took him into theatre where they did plastic surgery on his little perfect shaped mouth, he had no broken bones but needed stitches in his arm, the swelling the doctor said would go down. Especially the left side of his face was so swollen it hung down like a giant grape with his little rose bud lips lop sided. However according to the ambulance man Nikalos was very lucky that he had had all the right gear on as it could have been worse and the fact that the bike had wedged itself up under the front of his helmet saved him from more injuries because he had become part of the bike and didn’t bang into anything other than the ditch. As they are telling me this I’m thinking are you all crazy! Look at him he looks like a little gremlin from a Halloween movie, my poor fragile Nikalos with his tiny fine bones and prefect face yet he was alive. Over the days he healed the swelling had gone down and he can talk properly, his bruises are purple, blue and green and he doesn’t want people to see him ‘because he’s scary’ but he said to me, ‘nanny I tried to turn the bike but it was too late. I want to go back there but just to fly my kite.’ Bless his little heart- Nikalos my brave grandson will be okay.

  • I’m so sorry to hear this news! Our children have dirt bikes and all the safety gear which they always ware. For years I would not let my first born get a dirt bike when her father would ask me, because of these reasons and that a family member lost her nephew off her side of the family after her son and cousin worked on their dirt bikes he went for a ride and was wrapped around a tree. It reminds me now why I didn’t wan my daughters getting dirt bikes. How ever I can say they haven’t had an accidents thank goodness.

I hope your grandson heals quickly and that if he returns to his bike one day that his parents will adjust the throtelle on his bike as this has been a saving grace on our daughters bike.

  • Oh so glad to hear he is OK. I must say I really dislike motor bikes for this very reason. A family friend nearly lost her son on a quad bike years ago, and these stories are all too common.

    • I’d have to agree with you there. None of my children had them. However it is hard to tell grown adult what to do with their own children, they learnt the hard way. In saying that Nikalos will be okay and he is and was a very brave little boy. Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

  • I’m so relieved to read he is recovering. I wish him well. I hope other parents read this and ensure their kids have all the right gear. But even so, I’m sorry, I’m an overprotective parent and I don’t think I’d allow my five year old a motorbike.

    • As A grandmother I’d have to agree with you.
