Call me obsessive, call me anal: but why do people wear shoes inside their houses?

I have a baby who is at the stage of crawling and exploring. Everything ends up in her mouth. When she crawls in places where shoes are allowed, her feet and hands are filthy and need a good wipe down. When she crawls at home, the dirt is less visible.

Don’t get me wrong, she ‘reads’ books from the library, plays with other children’s toys, pats animals and eats food from our floor. I am not a germaphobe.

What I IDO ask you to consider is, do you know what is on the bottom of your shoes?
Would you want your baby/pet licking that?

  • Good points you make. We never wore shoes inside growing up, not the same for my kids, hubby’s fault. So much better for cleanliness and wear and tear on floor coverings

  • We usually have our shoes off at home but it’s more for comfort and airing our feet out. I figure my baby will eat absolutely anything so I’m not too worried about that aspect. Helps build up her immune system. I don’t mind that much if people wear their shoes in my house.

  • I am happy to abide by others wishes in their homes, in fact my best friend has a no shoes policy in her house. I prefer to have shoes on in the house, so I now have a pair of thongs in summer and a pair of slippers in winter which are solely for house use.

The turning point for me was when we had our carpets cleaned. I’ll admit we weren’t great at keeping up with the twice, at least once schedule for carpet cleaning.

The amount of dirt they got out of the carpet made me feel I’ll. so since then, we have house shoes. In regards to visitors, some do keep them on, but most don’t. I vaccum the carpets at least once a day, and now get carpets cleaned regularly

  • I hate the wearing of shoes in any house, I can see why people do it. For me I think it is better to allow our feet to air out. Only problem is having to put them back on afterwards at other people’s houses. Some look weird at me for doing this, it is not only what is on your shoes but some shoes damage floors. Have a friend where she supplies socks so your feet do not touch her floors, now that might be a bit over the top. I take my own socks to her place, do not like using other people’s ones.

  • Oh I totally support you on this. My baby almost died from a serious dysentery bug at eight months, one Christmas when we were guests at a relatives. Their dog had the run of the house and try as I might to keep my little one in one area I failed. Your house, your rules. I even had workman wear plastic bags over their safety boots when they came to do repairs in my home. My son is almost 40 years of age but I still recall how seriously ill he was.

  • I agree 100%. It is a Japanese custom to take off your shoes & there was many a time I wished we could adopt their custom when my kiddies were babies.

  • i’m with you 100%., even go to the extent of running shoes (the sole) under hot water with some anti-bac wash.

  • That’s why I clean my floors regularly. It’s not practical to take your shoes off if you’re in and out frequently.
