I was watching the show on ABC2 called Other Peoples Breast milk, and I found the show truly fascinating.
It was about cross feeding ( nursing other peoples babies) milk banks ( selling breast milk for premie babies), breast feeding school aged children. Whilst I breast feed my daughter for over 16 months,I struggled to begin with
I think if we could make it less sexual and be open to wet nursing (someone else feeding your child, the royals did this for century’s),children would benefit( trust me I’m squeamish and not sure how I would have coped watching someone else breast feed my daughter, but this show does open your eyes. Worth a watch

  • I think this great if all parties to it are healthy. Great strategy!

  • Absolutely breast milk is best for bub. Not sure I could hand mine over to someone else for a feed though :/ There would have to be strict screening in place and then I’ld probably still only do it if I had to. Food for thought tho

  • My second was breastfeed with breastmilk from me and 3 other mothers. We spoke to the AMA and my midwife and everyone was supportive, given the circumstances. My baby thrived and she is now 17 months and doing very well. The other 3 mothers were friends. But I understand that there is a huge market for this on facebook.

  • Believe it was common practice in earlier years.

  • I don’t think there’s anything wrong with donating breast milk.. You just have to be certain that the donators are healthy people and not a drug addict looking for quick money! That’s the bit that scares me about people skiing breast milk!

  • An older friend of mine told me she did the same in that era. Apparently it was common practise.

  • I don’t think there is necessarily anything wrong with it but I don’t think I could nurse someone else’s child or have someone nurse my baby! Can’t really explain why though?

  • I was a premie baby and I the 70s I was common practise to give mothers milk to premie babies. My mum told me she had so much milk too much for me, that she agree dead to other babies having her milk. This want feed via the breast just feed via bottles

  • I breastfed my son till he was 2 years 10 months and I don’t think I could of watched another woman feeding my son and visa versa I couldn’t feed someone’s else’s child.
Yes I would donate my milk but think it’s such a special bond between mother and baby to be feeding someone’s baby.

  • I saw this too. I’m more than happy to donate milk or if needed buy milk from a bank. But I would not be comfortable with someone feeding my baby or feeding someone else’s baby. It’s just too personal. But i do think Milk banks are a great idea, there should be more of them and more accessible.

  • My eldest is 30 this year and when I had her she would not take to me and after 4 days as to what i thought was nothing but water as they told me if she was really hungry she would take…well a fill in night nurse whom helped me one night and found I needed a nipple shield let it slip that my Daughter was being feed my others breast milk which was supplies that Mum’s left for there prem babies. I was shocked but also glad to know she had been having something. So without this nurse’s slip up I would have been non the wiser so this was going on many years ago behind Mum’s backs. I do not see breast feeding as a sexual act at all and do not understand if people do. These day they would have to really screen them milk and I do hope back than they did as well. Sorry but my personal opinion is if you can not breast fed for any reason or do not want to there is nothing wrong with the bottle. I would rather the bottle than some one else providing milk for my child.
