Hello!

My husband and I met when we were 16. That was 12 years ago. We knew from the beginning that we would get married and have children one day. After finishing university and working for a couple of years we decided to start trying for a family. The day I stopped taking the pill, I celebrated with some good friends and shared the news of our impending family plans. I assumed we would fall pregnant straight away, but nothing seemed to be happening. I started to chart my cycles, changed my diet, exercised and read up everything I could about preparing my body for a baby. After a year, still no baby news. It was depressing to tell my friends each month that I wasn’t pregnant, and it was even harder to be happy for other friends who were announcing their own baby news. To top it all off, my husband changed jobs and started working shift work which made baby-making quite difficult on our already strict schedule. Then I lost my job and we moved several hundred kilometres away from our family and friends. Thinking a fresh start might make a difference, I had renewed hope for becoming a family. After another year went by without any signs of a baby, we went to see a specialist (I can now see I was in denial and should have sought professional help earlier). We were advised that it wasn’t impossible for us to fall pregnant naturally, but we should seriously consider IVF. We had recently become engaged and thought we wold concentrate on our wedding and then start the IVF treatment afterward. In the month leading up to our wedding, life was pretty hectic and baby making was not even given a thought. We were no longer having sex on a schedule, we were so busy with wedding decorations, dress fittings and final preparations. The morning of my hen’s night, I realised my period was late… well over a week late. I couldn’t figure out how I hadn’t noticed, after tracking every cycle for the last 2 1/2 years. We did two tests (two different brands just in case) and they were positive. Luckily our local doctor was open and he confirmed our news. I was 5 weeks pregnant. I quickly rang my maid of honour, who had planned a hen’s night full of drinking games. She arranged with the bar staff at the hotel to make serve me mock tequila sunrises. Everyone was quite impressed with the amount I was drinking, and since I was so excited about our news, everyone thought I was tipsy. We didn’t tell anyone else until we were past our three month mark, just to be certain. I guess we had taken the pressure off ourselves and we were more relaxed, or maybe our baby just wanted her parents to be married before she was born. But either way, we are so thankful our little girl has come along.

  • I worked with a lady who was trying to have a baby. The Drs could find any problem with either of them but said maybe it was stress at work. Within 3 months of finishing work she found out she was definitely pregnant.
I know of another lady whose small son was injured in an accident and was in long term hospital care. They had a baby who was crawling and they decided to have another one but weren’t successful. The were fortunate to be able to adopt a baby. About 12 months later she was pregnant.
