Whenever I get the note home saying that its parent teacher interviews coming up I honestly cringe until now. I have to boys at school (grade 1 and 4), my youngest has always done well he is your average run of the mill chid but unfortunately my oldest really struggles which is quite sad to see. I dreaded going in to see the teacher as in the past as they have always focused on what he does wrong, never anything positive, until now. Luckily ths year we have an amazing teacher. Don’t get get wrong she still tells me where he struggles but at least she doesn’t focus completely on them but instead says things like “he does find this area hard but he has mad a big improvement etc”. Here’s hoping we get more great teachers like this :)

  • Often such interviews have an approximate time limit and you either book a time or are allocated one. I feel that if you think there is a problem between when they are held you should be able to request a meeting to discuss the problems sooner rather than one case where a parent was told there was meeting scheduled for in 5 weeks time. There was absolutely no doubt that the problem would have got worse during that time. Then the school sent them a letter complaining about the issue that had asked to discuss only the week after ggrrr!!! The parents responded stating that they had requested a meeting to discuss the issue but been denied one.ggrrr!!!

  • My daughter finds spelling hard and last year her teacher focused more on the good which helped tremendously.

  • Try asking each teacher to tell you what your son is good at. That might change their focus.

  • Here Here! Thankfully teachers are beginning to understand more and more the importance of teaching and making the most of individual strengths instead of concentrating on what’s lacking. Unfortunately, the teacher we have this year is ‘old school’ grrrr

  • I haven’t gotten to the ‘parent/teacher’ interviews yet (my daughter will be 4 in August), but this made me think of my experiences with parent/teacher interviews….I held off telling my mum until the day before so that there would be no more slots. Naughty me haha
