Hello!

This topic annoys me to no end, although i can understand both sides of the story.

As a single mum every cent that I spend is measured, so, as with all parents (I refer particularly those with children in childcare/daycare as this is what i am dealing with presently, although this ‘problem’ occurs in all walks of life…..pre, primary & high school….as well as adults in the workforce) having my child take a day off from daycare really has me grinding my teeth and questioning whether it’s necessary….

Yes, the day needs to be paid for, as your spot has been held for you, but is money really worth the fact that your child is:

* Not feeling well and therefore placing extra strain on the teachers as they need to keep a more watchful eye on your child

* Having your child feel like ‘crap’ emotionally as well as physically because their needs haven’t been listened to & they’re made to attend school (in whatever form) instead of being with the person/people who will make them feel far better than any medicine can…..a hug from mum is the best medicine there is

* Exposing other children with whatever ails your child, as well as the teachers, which in turn exposes parents who in a vicious cycle take it to work with them and spread the germs…..& if the teachers come down with a bug, thats removing their presence in caring for your child …..and what it ALL teachers were to get sick at once……that would mean the centre closing whilst they recover affecting families at so many levels.

Now as i previously said, i understand why parents feel the need to send their children to daycare/childcare/school no matter what and a lot are working to cover the cost of daycare, but surely the points I made above should get people really thinking about what they’re doing when they choose to send their child to school when they are unwell.

  • It’s like going to work sick for adults. I was lucky that I didn’t have to do that to my kids only because my mother in law helped looks after them while I was at work. That is why they are pushing for all kids to be immunised so that if worse come to worse they will only catch the common cold and not something too serious. I am sure teachers will ring the parents to tell them to send them home , it happens all the time .

  • First of all- well done for bringing this up. I do understand both sides I truly do.
In my opinion this is a very heated topic to talk about.
I am currently (and have been since she was born) dealing with my 2 year old daughter being sick every two-four weeks. She attends daycare two days a week and so does her 4 year old brother. Her brother was never ever sick this constantly and it drives so batty when Miss 2 comes home with something else.

I do have to ask though- what type of sickness are you referring to?
If it is the normal cold and flu rather than a chest infection then there is not alot that a parent can do to keep their kids away, This tends to be viral rather than bacterial at the best of times and most viral bugs can take up to a few weeks to pass.

I know that it is not easy and i don’t want to be the “bad” guy (mom) in this but i do understand where you are coming from. In saying that it is proven (by Miss 2 pediatrician and GP) that the more often that the child is sick in younger childhood years the more they will build their immune system up and will be less likely to get sick as an adult :)

All the best of luck to you and take care.

  • I hate when other kids get my kids sick

  • Could not agree with you more on this, I get both sides but some days kids just need to be at home when sick.

  • It’s not usual to see sick kids at school.

  • I don’t think it is fair if there child is contagious to be sending them to school. Work will go on without them for one day!
