Its such a big scarey thing to become pregnant and when you have never been around children much in your life, its really hard to now what we are in for.

I have always been a cat person and my darling puddy cat has been number one for 10 years or more, While i was pregnant i didnt really know how things would go, and that puss would cope or not, she has always slept in my bed with me and demands soo much attention, However when my little girl entered the world,

the cat was sent to sleep in the lounge and sometimes even on the balcony, for the first year puss tried her hardest to get more attention and love from me, but i was just too tired and had not enough time, I would love her and cuddle her but not just the same as before.

To puss’s delight after 1 year she was allowed back into my room, she was overjoyed and couldnt be happier. I am so proud she has handled the new addition to the family, However i do have to keep a close eye around the 2 of them because puss is older and temperamental, which means she can never ever be trusted alone with my little girl.

  • A friend of mine got a rescue pup when she was in the early stages of pregnancy not thinking in advance of issues there might be. She trained the pup that she was not allowed to touch the baby at all. As soon as the baby sat up independently she taught her how to pat the pup gently and the pup to behave, when she started crawling taught them to play together gently. She was also trained that she was not allowed to lick the baby under any circumstances. The only mishap they ever encountered was when Missy suddenly decided to go out the back door just behind the dog. Missy got too close and the dog knocked her over as she jumped down. Result a few bruises. She also followed the same procedure with her 2nd baby – same results. The dog is more boisterous with adults than she is with children, giving us the hint she wants “rougher play” than she can have with the children

  • We didn’t have lets until the kids were older. Our youngest was 2 when we got a cat, 8 when we got a dog. So they became the kids pets and got along famously from the start

  • Thank you for your wonderful story, it must be difficult for pets being no longer number one when a baby joins the family. I do hope as your little girl grows, she and your cat form a close bond.
