Hello!

Miss 6 has encopresis due to stress induced constipation. At first when she was having poo accidents so regularly we tried punishing her with timeout, taking her toys away, guilting her about smelling bad, screaming, fighting, arguing, it was a nightmare. I thought that she was being lazy and not noticing because she was too busy playing, so now I feel like the worst mum ever! She was lying to me about having accidents and I was so stressed out. She is in grade one at school and I don’t want her to get picked on because she is the kid that poops her pants. Apparently this is more common in boys. I don’t really know that much about it so far except that she can’t smell it when she does it, doesn’t feel it properly and it’s caused because she is constipated. I’m finding it really hard to deal with especially when we go out anywhere. We’ve stopped punishing her now we know it isn’t something she is doing deliberately, plus she has been a bit spoilt because I feel so bad about how I punished before. Has anyone else been through this? She is on laxatives now and we are going to get her to talk to someone to help deal with the anxiety and stress (WHAT DOES A 6 YEAR OLD NEED TO BE STRESSED ABOUT?) I’m trying really hard to do the best I can for her but right now I have no idea what that is!

  • If the issue isn’t resolved her bowel may become laxative reliant. Resolving that issue may eliminate the stress and anxiety.

  • You poor thing, this really is a stressful situation. Try to be extremely patient as you stessing will only make your daughter stress more. Get her to a bowel specialist, get the chronic constipation sorted and maybe she needs help retrainng her bowel. A good specialist should be able to help you sort out all these things, including changing her diet so that she can get over it. Good luck.
