Hello!

Although still early days – or so I thought (bub is only 7.5 mths after all) – I’ve been advised by well-meaning fellow mums to enrol my bub into reputable private schools NOW. After going on a couple of school tours in the lower north shore, I must admit I’m very impressed by the facilities and the mannerism displayed by the students.

I wonder if it’s really worth the high price tag though? I mean can’t I send my child to a public school and just arrange for extra curricular activities outside of school and achieve the same result? Doesn’t it really depend on the individual anyway? If a child doesn’t like to learn, then no matter what school she goes to, is it really going to make a difference?

I guess I stil have 5 years to ponder those questions. In the mean time will start saving, just in case.

  • You are right about the child, if they don’t want to learn, it’s tough. My kids went public, we live in a small country town so there was no choice unless they did a 4 1/2 hour round trip every day or board away from home Mon-Fri. Why don’t you do a couple of tours of public schools to compare? The cost of private school goes deeper then just fees, there’s uniforms, excursions, camps, bits and pieces needed for some of the classes. You’ll need deep pockets, but if your child benefits, it’s worth it! Lucky you have 5 years to think about it :/

  • I am 23 and I was schooled in both, my experience outcomes in having a better level of education and care at the private school. However my public primary school was amazing.
I’d definitely go with your gut feeling.

  • that my schools site should help you. our public school does way better for the kids education than the private school. They get all their results from naplan testing. Check out the schools in your area and compare them

  • My friend teaches in a private school and she maintains it’s the level of involvement from the parents that is the most important factor.

  • It depends on the child and what each school has to offer.

  • The class sizes in schools now are alot smaller. If you were to go private all you need do is start putting away say $20 a week. By the time school starts you will have the money. Public still costs so to put the money away is a good idea both ways. Ask other mum’s and go to the schools in your area. You can enroll now I believe as it can get busy later and you may miss out.

  • My children started off in the private system but are now getting a better education in the public system for a fraction of the cost.

  • I went to public school and my husband went to private school. I loved school and he not so much. We have the same issue do we go public or private.

  • I went to both private and public schools – I would never, ever recommend a private school as it was deeply unpleasant – public school was fantastic
