The other day whilst waiting to be seen by my doctor sitting opposite me on a long padded bench was a mum and her young son. The little chap happily moved, crawled and walked up and down the bench , sometimes wandering onto the floor but never annoying or bothering his mum or anyone else, indeed he was a well behaved little fellow. All the while his mum had her head bent down, eyes on the screen and fingers busy on her phone. This action went on for at least 15 minutes and not once did she pay any attention to her son. During this time I started with smiling at him then moved on to covering my face and playing a game of peek a boo, this simple game and attention was enjoyed by the youngster immensely . During my waiting the mum never acknowledged her son or inter-reacted with him once , surely life’s to short to waste and I am just sad that folk just can’t take time out to smell the roses as their noses are always in their phones.

  • I would also like to see less down time of phone and tablets and other devices. So much goes on right in front of us and it would be a shame not to engage in it and be involved in the moment.

  • So glad the little chap was moving about and didn’t also have a phone or screen in front of him! That is also a problem. Also what you describe is precisely the situation that lots of children encounter in religious circles, where they accompany parents, say into a catholic church, and are then “ignored” for 10, 20 30 minutes or more while the parent attempts to sing, pray, think, listen, read etc. with the kid just ‘present’ but not engaged by anyone or anything. And churches most creative solution is (a) segreation in a creche/SUnday School not (b) integration and interaction. Life is too short indeed.

  • Yes it’s true that some people spend too much time on their phones but we don’t know that mum or her situation. That may have been trying to reschedule something , it could have been anything

  • I agree in principle but that mum might have been looking at her bank account to figure out how she was going to get to the end of the week with what she’s got. She might normally be very engaged with her little one but just happened to have a deadline that day. She might have a friend going through a tough time that she was consoling. Or she might have been on Facebook. Fact is, we don’t know what she was doing or why. That 15 minutes might be the only time she touches her phone all day. We shouldn’t judge what we don’t understand.

  • So true we all need to stop a moment and watch what is happening around us rather than what is on the screen they are only little for a short time
