Hello!

At the start of 2014 we had to take our rottie ‘Jessie Bonnie’ to the vet. She had these growths, one near the eye, one on her back that we were worried about. She also was starting to get really bad arthritis. She weighed 44kgs, which was a little bit overweight.

In 2004 on the 21st May, Jessie Bonnie was born. On the 27th May it was our son’s 16th birthday and there is nothing better than to give him puppy food, a collar and lead and puppy toys for his birthday. He looked at us with a strange wonder, – wondering where the puppy was, what sort etc. We took him for a walk with a length of pink elastic ribbon. As soon as we walked in the driveway, he knew he was getting a rottie pup. Friends of ours offered him first pick of the litter, as we knew their mum there was no other pup we wanted. Chris picked the runt of the litter. 5 weeks later we bought the pup home, couldn’t pick between Jessie and Bonnie. Therefore, she was named Jessie Bonnie Lindsay.

So now we are 10 and a half years later, she ended up having to live with nanny and poppy, as chris moved around for school and just couldn’t take her with him It broke his heart, but he would come and pick her up, take her to the beach and of course as a young man, he used Jessie as a ‘pick up line’ – oh isn’t she gorgeous, is she yours? etc.

As a chronic pain sufferer, we bought me an electric king single bed and mick was in a double bed pushed up against mine. We were together, but not. Jessie slept on poppy’s bed and coco, a Maltese cross chihuahua would sleep on mine. I would wake up during the night to jessie being under the doona with her head on the pillow. I am sure she was part human. Jessie loved to sing to TV commercials and ads. She was beautiful, so loving. When Chris’ first daughter was born, they all came to live with us until they found a home near us. Jessie was fantastic with Briella, came to us when Briella cried, Jessie would sit near Briella and when we held her, Jessie would give her a kiss. We completely trusted Jessie around Briella, and as she grew, Jessie became closer to her. Now Briella is 5 and when she comes for a sleepover, as soon as Jessie would hear her arrive, she would race in, sit with her, give her a kiss, and bree would hug her.

Throughout 2014 Jessie became weaker, we gave her pain killers for her arthritis, but you could tell she was having more difficulty. So around November we took her back to the vet. Jessie was so bad, she hardly ate, was losing weight. The vet kept her overnight, we were told her Liver Enzyymes should be between 10 and 120, hers were 4670. The vet ‘Karen’ was wonderful. Karen told us she didn’t expect Jessie to live out the week. We asked if she was in any pain, the only pain is the arthritis, but the tablets helped that. So during the week we planned to have Jessie cremated, we told Chris, who was heartbroken, he had to come and spend time and say goodbye. But days passed, then weeks passed, Poppy bought her Sausage Rolls to have her tablets. Karen, the vet, was shocked she was still alive. Jessie was fighting with all her might. It looked as if she was putting on weight, so having her for Christmas was great. Then the New Year passed. January passed, then as we came into February Jessie started going downhill. As the days went by, poppy would go shopping and buy party pies, party sausage rolls, different types of dog food, anything to get her to eat. Then coming to the weekend of the 7th February 2015, we made the decision that Jessie was suffering far too much. We rang Chris, asked him to come and say goodbye to Jessie. We left them alone for a few minutes, came back and said we needed to get through this together.

Tuesday 10th February, 2015 Jessie Bonnie Lindsay was taken to Karen, Mick and I stayed with her as we said goodbye. This broke our hearts, we just cried and cried. I told her as she was leaving us to go and play with our previous pets Beauregard the Border Collie, Milo the pussy cat, Fluffy our first pet cat together. She was to go over the Rainbow Bridge.

Karen gave us the leaflet for the Pet Crematorium, and we could go home, choose what we want, Anna from the Crematorium would pick up Jessie and would wait to hear from us the next day. So on Wednesday morning I rang Anna, she was wonderful. She was from the “Cornerstone Pet Crematorium” – The Sensitive Alternative, the only pet crematorium in Tasmania, I think. Anna was wonderful. We arranged to get 2 Polished boxes, half her ashes in each with a plaque on each reading “JESSIE BONNIE – IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER”. I asked Anna to let me know when she was being cremated so I could sit at home to say a few words. She would text me. We arranged to collect her on the Friday. Anna rang on Friday morning to say the plaque’s were done, and I asked if we could collect her on Monday.

The reason being, Mick has not stopped crying since we took her to Karen the Vet. I have never seen him like this. Mick and Chris are so heartbroken that both of them have hardly eaten, especially Mick. He won’t stop crying. Here is a man in his late 60’s, whom has loved a little girl so much, there is a great hole in his heart now. After arranging the boxes with Anna over the phone, I broke down and cried uncontrollably in the toilet, away from Mick, I need to be strong for both of them – Mick and Chris, but I just Howled and howled. Unfortunately Mick heard me. Friday was the first time he had eaten since Monday, just the smell of food had made him feel sick. I thought he was coming along ok, then Friday night he started crying uncontrollably.

Only time will get us through this great loss. Coco is missing her terribly, so we are going to take him everywhere in the car with us. Even our cat Misty is showing signs of loss. We are going to Chris’ for dinner Sunday night to tell Briella. Once we get her ashes, we can start to heal.

I never thought I would own a rottie after hearing how vicious a dog they were supposed to be. It is the owners that give them a bad name. They are the most placid dogs with so much love to give, so if you want a good, loving dog, think about a Rotweiller.

  • thank you so much for your beautiful comments. Jessie bonnie was so important to all our family. It is amazing how one dog shared so much love to so many hearts, everyone who met her fell in love with her. She was spoilt rotten, but that’s what nanny and poppy’s are for. Even when she was sick, if she stopped eating, poppy would race to the bakery or supermarket and buy her some little party pies or sausage rolls, her last meal was KFC.

This beautiful girl gave so much unconditional love, she deserved to be spoilt. We went to the pet crematorium yesterday and picked up 2 polished wooden boxes with ‘ Jessie Bonnie – In our hearts forever, we were also given a stunning, beautiful condolences card in a beautiful bag with the two boxes. Our son collected his box today. It was hard yesterday, but it was good bringing her home again.

My coco – maltese x is still suffering, he really misses jessie. We had to leave him behind as he would not go on the lead. I am not sure whether he was worried he wouldn’t be coming home like jessie as he has been on the lead before without causing any problems.

Mick is on the mend. When he thinks too much, he starts to cry. I am trying to be strong, I almost broke down at the crematorium.

take care and to those whom have lost any pet, my thoughts are with you at this sad time. I found the rainbow bridge that pets are supposed to go over, but it does cost.
My thoughts are with all mum’s on this day. Bless all of you xxx dee
