I had a terrible time when I thought about having to go back to work and put my, then 12 month old into daycare. He’s been going for 11 weeks now and yes he has picked up EVERYTHING :-/. It is incredibly frustrating and annoying but as a teacher I’ve had a lot of my friends tell me that its building his immune system. And that it’s better for him to build it now, at daycare, rather than when he firsts starts school as I’d hate for him to be sick then and miss days of school. I won’t deny that it’s extremely frustrating and heartbreaking when he’s sick though :( As for family daycare versus normal daycare something a friend said to me made wonderful sense – in the family daycare there is only one adult there and so you never know for sure if your baby is being treated right day to day coz there’s no one else to tell you otherwise. This made great sense to me and so I chose a normal (but privately run not one of the big daycares) to put my baby in. They allowed me to pop in n spend a few hours a day with him there before he started too. That way you get to see what goes on. Also coz I didn’t have to book those visits, I just called in, it gave me an opportunity to check it out. And coz I was popping in the workers weren’t prepared or being ‘fake’. This is what I’ve found and my experience. I hope it helps you a little in making your decision though. Good luck x

  • My grandson started daycare when his mums maternity leave ended. He too picked up everything going. And still is, as have his parents

  • I’ve also been told daycare builds their immune system, as well as the people who care for them :/ Doenst make it any easier for you when they’re sick though. It’s great to read your experience, it’s been very helpful

  • Very good advice. I was troubled with sickness when my babies first attended childcare and was also assured it would boost their immune system. Not sure about that bit as they still pick up heaps from school
