Hello!

I have been helping a preschool parent group to transition to “big” school from next week. After several discussions and many interactive feedback sessions I’ve compiled a list of systems that work best for most parents. It may not apply to everyone so, my suggestion is to take away what is useful and, read through the rest.

1. Create a “Pitstop” where, school bags, library bags, raincoats, library bags, hats and any school or after school activity bags (eg. dancing costume and ballet shoes or, tennis racquets and balls, etc) can be stored.

2. Prepare uniforms for the next day the previous evening, that way any missing items can be accounted for and any rips can be repaired.

3. If possible pack drink bottles, school lunches and morning tea boxes the previous evening and get the children to help, so they contribute and this reduces chances of uneaten lunches.

4. Keep a notepad and pen handy on the fridge so that any appointments, teacher meetings, excursions, play dates and fees/ payments can be listed to deal with by the due date.

5. Get the children involved as much as possible to keep them involved and to help them learn to take responsibility for themselves.

Hope these tips help and are useful reminders to new (and old) parents.

  • Great tips thanks. I have a son starting pre-kinder soon.

  • I’d use a calendar not a notepad for point 4, but otherwise this is a practical list.

  • I have a set of basket drawers where my twins uniforms live – they just head there in the morning and dress themselves. I also have a notice board where I peg the school notices and remove them when the date has passed.

  • Great tips. I definitely have to do lunches the night before – too busy in the mornings.
