Second hand clothes from school and charity shops are wonderful at this time of year. Uniforms can be so expensive and savings can be made by not buying new uniforms. Check out these places for uniforms.

  • Second hand uniforms come in handy especially if you child is in their last year of school and urgently require an article of clothing.

  • Second hand can be just as good as new, especially with uniforms with children that outgrow there uniforms quickly during growth spurts.

  • I’m all for second hand anything – especially uniforms, as long as they are in good condition. Our school has just brought in new panelled polo shirts so the chances of finding them in oppies is pretty slim – along with Scout Uniforms!! Seriously, once upon a time they were everywhere – now they are as rare as hens teeth !!

  • Second is great. I’m discovering the benefits and savings of second hand. We have a wonderful Lifeline shop down the road that I donated to and walked in to
Find a wonderfully well set out, clean, friendly and absolutely beautiful place, full of items that are on some occasions brand new. My son’s school has a second hand uniform buying opportunity every Friday, which is wonderful and we have some things set aside to give to them as well.

  • If you child’s school has a uniform shop, some sell second hand uniforms. I believe the school holds a % of the sale price. A friend of mine bought some second hand uniforms that look as new. Some of the schools will not sell second hand uniforms if they have any marks on them.
Some of the private schools have their own uniform shops. They buy in bulk and you can buy them cheaper than if retail stores bought just a few and sold them. Most retail stores will not sell private school uniforms any more.

  • A good place to look is local pay it forward sites, a great community swap site.

  • Yes it is a shame that some uniform items are so expensive and you don’t always get the quality either. Often they are ‘Made in China’ with weak seams and poor fabric and yet you pay as if they were Australian made. Some don’t even make it to the second hand store because they fall apart! So beware the ‘wear and tear’ factor in second hand clothes. School clothes can be the worst!

  • I’ve been lucky enough to be offered some hand me downs from other mums at school – and we gratefully keep that “chain” going by passing things on.

  • I am a big advocate for second -hand shops. I love the bargains that I can get. Having 4 children and 2 adults in our house it gets expensive very quickly buying new clothes all the time.

  • Absolutely. I love checking out second hand shops. You can find very good bargains. And this way you are helping our world by reusing stuff.

    • This is why I enjoy buying second hand clothes too! It is kinder to the world that we will be leaving to our children.
