Hello!

I am currently 20 weeks pregnant with a little baby girl. My ex-partner and I are still good friends, but I’m not sure how much he is going to help financially. I am worried that I won’t be able to survive when I leave work. I am 23 years old & have just moved into my own apartment so that I can bring my baby up the best way possible.
If anyone has any tips, suggestions, advice or anything, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Parents are obligated by law to take care of their parental responsibilities and this includes financially. Still having a good relationship with him is a good thing for everyone. The important thing is for you and your bub to financially survive. I suggest you get in contact with Centrelink for advice on childcare payments. Hopefully they can provide you with some good advice. Also; link in with a mums group. This kind of group would be good for networking and support.

  • Being friends is a great start, may pay to sit down and put a plan in place before baby arrives

  • Thank you so much. It’s a bit hard with him, he’s very undecisive & unreliable – so even if he says he will look after bub 2 days a week, or he will give me a certain amount a week, it won’t actually end up being like that, I don’t think he does that intentionally, it’s just the way he is. It’s all up in the air which is hard when I like to have a bit of a plan and be organised. Thanks for the support.

  • Being friends with your ex is a great start just be honest with him and ask him if he plans on helping you financially with your child. If he does then work out a payment plan that suits the both of you and see how much he can contribute. If he doesn’t help financially then maybe he can help you out in other ways if you find that money is going to be real tight. Maybe he can take bub a few days a week so you can continue working. You can always seek help with centrelink for single mothers if you find no other way because it sounds like you need all the help you can get. But speak to your ex and find out what his plans are it’s best to know now so you know where you and your baby stand. Do it now before bub comes I wish you all the best x
