Hello!

Ever since I can remember our 5 year old son has pronounced words differently to others. We correct him all the time and have had speech therapy for him to improve his speech. He did become lazy there for a while where “Dad” would become “Da”. He now pronounces it as “da-d!” and emphasizes the ending sound which isn’t perfect but it’s better than the alternative. I was doing his homework words with him when I was trying to get him to say the “k” sound. This is a very tricky sound for kids as it comes from the back of the mouth, He can normally do it if he pushes his tongue back with his finger but this day to my suprise he just looked at me and said the k sound perfectly without anything in his mouth. Then said it another 5 times following it! I was soo proud of him and we showed daddy as soon as he got home. The next day at speech therapy the therapist was shocked when she asked him to stay the k sound and he said it with ease. Apparently kids normally get this sound once out of 10 times when they first learn it but he had gotten it over 20 times straight by now. We were and are soo proud of him :-)

  • Huge congratulations to your little one.
I am thinking in take my 2.5 years old to a speech therapy as she has problems saying “m”. Reading your story gave me the push to look for help asap.

    • I’m glad to hear that my story has helped you make a decision. It is quite expensive however if you talk to your doctor than you can get 5 subsidised speech therapy lessons per year which works out only about $20 each instead of $70 each for the first 5. You can also call your local community health centre to get 3-4 free ones. We go to Play with words in Springwood who are really good with him and lots of games to keep the kids entertained.

  • I am glad you got advice and took your son to speech therapy.
Sometimes they copy the bad habits of others who he hears talking. It may have been another child at childcare or kindergarten. Your son may have got upset when you continuously corrected him, then he did it more. Please understand, I am not judging you. You have made great effort to help him. Sometimes children respond with outsiders better than they do with their parents. It’s very frustrating when that happens. Sometimes therapy is a slow process, other times it suddenly has good results and continues really quickly. I hope he accomplishes this quickly. He will be less likely to get behind at school. The fact that spelling of many words isn’t phonetic can cause problems too.

  • Sometimes kids just need a bit of help, and then they fly.

  • So glad your efforts are paying off – its a hard road. We did this for a few years and eventually things fell into place. Stuttering was a problem for a while – I think it was a confidence thing. You may find that Speech and Drama really helps when your child is old enough.
